Friday, August 25th, 1955
The   fifth regular  meeting  of the   Senate   of  The
University  of  British  Columbia  for  the   Session  1952-53
was  held   on  Friday,   August   25th,   1933,   at   8:00  p.m.,   in
the  Board   and   Senate   Room.
In   the   absence   of President  Klinck and  the  Acting
President, Dean Buchanan,-

the Chair.

(a) the fourth regular meeting of
May 10th, and
(b) the adjourned meeting of June
8th, be taken as read, and
adopted.

A  letter  was   received  from  the  Board  of  Governors
expressing  the   opinions   of   the   Board   in   reference   to  the
powers  and  duties   of the   Co-ordinating  Committee   of  the
Board  and  Senate. 286.

Judge   Swanson)   That  this   communication  from the
Board be   referred  to   the   Committee
on Functions   of  the   Co-ordinating
Committee.

A  letter was   received  from   the  Board  of  Governors  in
reference   to   the   recommendations   of   Senate   in  regard   to
additional   scholarships  and  awards,   and  giving notice   that
the   following  amounts   in  excess   of   the   scholarships  provided  for  in  the   calendar had been granted:
!•  To Third Year Students in Arts and Science
Robert A.   Findlay - $75.00
J.   Gilbert   Hooley - $75.00
2.     To   First  Year  Students   in  Arts   and  Science
Peter J.   Disney - $50.00
William G.   Trapp - $50.00
5.     That  a   special   award  of   $50.00 be made   to  each   of
the   following  First   Year  students   in  Arts   and
Science"

A  letter was   received   from  the  Board  of  Governors
giving approval   to  the  recommendation  of  Senate   that a
David  Thorn Bursary  of $75.00  be   awarded  to   C.   Duncan
MacKenzie.

A recommendation was received from the Faculty of
Arts and Science,-
That the Summer Session laboratory work in Botany 1
be accepted along with the Evening Course in Botany
as the equivalent of Botany 1 - three units.

Results   of  the  Examinations   of the   Summer  Session

Dr.   Brown)   That  the   report   from the   Faculty   of
Arts  and   Science   concerning  the
Summer  Session,   1933,  be   approved,   and
the   degree   of   B.A.   granted to  the
candidates   recommended.

Eighteenth Annual General Meeting of Convocation.

and   filed.

A letter was received from the general secretary of
the Fifth Pacific Science Congress expressing appreciation
for the part taken by the University in promoting the
success of the Congress. 288.

A cablegram was   received  from  Dr.  Wong Wen  Hao  expressing his  appreciation  for  the   Honorary  Degree   conferred

sent to Miss Bollert expressing the sympathy of
Senate on the death of her
brother.
