Tuesday, April 1st, 1924
A special meeting of the Senate of The
University of British Columbia was held on Tuesday,
April 1st, 1924 at 8:00 P.M. in the Board Room at the
University offices.
Present:  The President (in the Chair);  the
Chancellor;  Dean F. M. Clement, Dr. R. W. Brock, Mr.
P. A. Boving, Mr. Wilfrid Sadler, Dr. D. Buchanan,  Mr.
G. A. Fergusson, Rev. W. H. Vance, Dr. G. G. Sedgewiok,
Mr. Cecil Killam, Mr. J. S. Gordon, Rev. A. H. Sovereign,
Mr* W. P. Argue.
The secretary read the call of the meeting.
Mr. G. E. Robinson and Dr. H. F. G. Letson
sent messages of regret at their inability to attend
the meeting.
791 A letter was received from the Board of
Governors approving of the recommendation of Senate that
the words "and Surveying" be dropped after Civil
Engineering in the calendar, pages 16, 184, etc.  This
was ordered filed.
7 92   Offer of Scholarships by the Canadian Club of Vancouver.
The recommendation of the Committee on Prizes
and Scholarships in reference to these scholarships is
as follows: 363
Tuesday, April 1st, 1924
The Committee on Prizes and Scholarships
recommends the acceptance of the Scholarships offered
by the Canadian Club of Vancouver for the year
1923-24, one scholarship of $200 to be awarded as a
first prize, and one of $100 as a seoond, for the
best original investigation by an undergraduate
student of any Faculty of the University.  The
Committee does not recommend the carrying forward of
the date for the completion of the work beyond the
close of the examination period.

the Canadian Club for their
generous gift and that the
awards be made on the basis of
theses and essays handed in this
year, if acceptable to the
Canadian Club.       Carried
793   Offer of Bursary by the British Columbia Division of the
Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.	
The British Columbia Division of the Canadian
Institute of Mining and Metallurgy offers a bursary
of $50 to be awarded on the recommendation of the
Faculty of Applied Science to the student taking the
courses in Mining, Metallurgy, or Geological
Engineering, who, in the judgment of the Faculty,
will be most benefited thereby.

Columbia Division  of   the   Canadian
Institute   of   Mining and  Metallurgy
be accepted. Carried
794 Dr.   Buchanan,   Chairman  of   the   Committee   on
Calendar,   presented a  report   in  regard  to:
Changes   in   courses   in Agriculture.
Change   in  Senior  Matriculation  requirements.
The   list   of  Senate   Representatives in  the   front
of the   calendar. 364

That the report of the Calendar
Committee on courses in
Agriculture be received and
adopted. Carried
Senior Matriculation requirements were revised
to conform more closely to the course in First Year Arts,
as follows:
1. English.
2. Mathematics.
3,4,5.     Three   of  the  following!   inoluding at
least  one   science   and one   language:
History,   Chemistry,   Physios,   Biology,
French,   German,  Greek,   Latin.

Principal   Vance)     That the   report  be   adopted
subject   to   the  approval  of  the
Faculties. Carried
It  was  agreed   that  the   following   deletions   be
made   in  the   list  of  Senate as -appearing in  the  calendar:
"Dean   of   the   Faoulty  of   Forestry*
"Representatives  of   the   Faculty of Forestry"
"Representative  of  Provincial  Teachers'
Institute".
