Friday, August 26th, 1938,
The fifth regular meeting of the Senate of The
University of British Columbia for the Session 1937-38
was held on Friday, August 26th, 1938, at 8:00 p.m.,
in the Board and Senate Room.
Present: President L. S. Klinck (in the Chair),
Dean D. Buchanan, Dr. Blythe Eagles, Dr. D. G. Laird,
Mr. Ira Dilworth, Mr. H.N. MacCorkindale, Mr. William
Morgan, Dr. H. R. Trumpour, Mr. Sherwood Lett, Mr. P. A,
Boving, Mr. John C. Oliver, Dr. Evlyn F. Farris and
Miss Isobel Harvey.
Expressions of regret at their inability to attend
the meeting were received from Dean J. N. Finlayson,
Mr. J. N. Harvey and Mr. J. N. Burnett.

1938, was received.
Calendar 1958-39
Approved, with the deletion of the announcement re
the University Chapter of the I.O.D.E. Loan Fund.
Increase in Amount of University Undergraduate
The Board had approved the report of the Joint
Faculty Committee on Prizes and Scholarships setting out
in detail the plan for the distribution of the fund of
|10,000.00 set aside by the Board.  The recommendation
of Senate in regard to an Increase In the amount of
University Undergraduate Scholarships had been included
in the report.
A copy of the Report of the Committee appointed by
the Board of Governors to draft regulations governing
the limitation of students was received and ordered
A letter from the Board of Governors was received,
together with a copy of a communication from the Provincial Parent-Teacher Federation of British Columbia under
date of May 13th, 1938, containing resolutions,-
(1) Requesting the re-establlshment of the degree
course in Home Economics;
(2) Urging that tuition fees be left as they were 619.

enrolment be not imposed; and
(3) Requesting that the foreign language requirement be dropped.

of B.A. upon the candidates
whose names are listed in the
At the request of the Faculty, consideration was
given to the standing of Gordon A. Clark, Audrey E.
Jost and Cherles C, Locke, who, pending and subject to
a decision in regard to their courses and standing and
the Calendar regulation in reference to the maximum
credit for Summer Session work in a calendar year, had
been taking six units in the Summer Session after
having taken a full course in the Winter Session.

with respect to these three students, and that the whole regulation be reviewed.      Carried 620.

Report of the President for the Academic Year ending
August 31st, 1937
(Copies of the report had been mailed to members
of Senate.)
The report was received and ordered filed.
Report of the Committee on Honorary Degrees
Dr. Farris, on behalf of the Committee, stated that
as the French Bar had decided not to send a representative to the Canadian Bar Association meeting, the power
left with the Committee to authorize the conferring of
an honorary degree upon a French delegate was not used.
The Committee reported, also, that as His Excellency
the Governor General of Canada was not coming West before
the spring, a special Congregation would not be held this
fall for the purpose of conferring upon him an honorary

on Honorary Degrees be adopted.
A copy of the minutes of the Twenty-third Annual
Meeting of Convocation, held on May 12th, 1938, was
received and ordered filed.
Letters were received from the following recipients
of honorary degrees in reply to the notification that
Senate had authorized the conferring of the degrees upon 622.

and filed.
A communication was received from the Librarians'
Section of the Secondary School Teachers' Association
of the Lower Mainland asking that the University take
steps to offer courses for the training of Librarians.

Mr. MacCorkindale) That the letter be
referred to the Faculties.
A communication from the High School and University
Matriculation Board containing recommendations in regard
to the award of additional scholarships was received,
together with a report of the Joint Faculty Committee on
Prizes and Scholarships recommending,-
(1) That the tie between the two candidates,
Robert Mack Lane and John Malcolm Russell
Margeson, who ranked equal for first place
in the Junior Matriculation examinations
be resolved by awarding a second scholarship ($175.00) to one of these students,
and that the money saved through there
being no award in District 5 be used for
this purpose.
(2) That a special scholarship ($175.00) be
awarded to Albert Desmond Turner, Senior
K 623.
