Friday, September 13th, 1935
An adjourned meeting of the Senate of The University
of British Columbia was held on Friday, September 15th,
1955, at 8:00 p.m., in the Board and Senate Room.
Present: President L. S. Klinck (in the Chair),
Dean F. M. Clement, Acting Dean J. M. Turnbull, Dean D.
Buchanan, Mr. E. A. Lloyd, Mr. H. F. Angus, Dr. A. H.
Hutchinson, Mr. H. C. Holmes, Mr. H. N. MacCorkindale,
Mr. H. T. Logan, Dr. G. G. Sedgewick, Miss M. L. Bollert,
Mr. Sherwood Lett, Mr. J. C. Oliver, Mr. P. A. Boving,
Dr. C. Killam, Dr. Evlyn F. Farris and Miss Isobel Harvey,
An expression of regret at his inability to attend
the meeting was received from Principal P. H. Elliott.
Reports of Committees
On Extra-University Teaching
Mr. Angus, Chairman, presented the report.
The report was considered clause by clause, and
with slight changes, was adopted.

Mr. Holmes) That the report as a whole, as
amended, be adopted.
Report of Com-iittee on Extra-University Teaching
The Senate Committee on Extra-University Teaching
has the honour to present the following recommendations:
1.  That Senate approve of the proposal for making
provision for adult education, and that Senate
recommend to the Board of Governors that they
make special provision accordingly in their
estimates for 1956-37 for such adult education
provided that the present standard of teaching
and such research work as may be necessary
thereto be maintained, anything that may be
contrary in the resolution of Senate of
December 20, 1935, notwithstanding. ■ .*

2. That Senate recommend to the Board of Governors
the constitution of a Department of University
Extension (which is to include Adult Education)
when funds are available.
3. That Senate recommend to the Board of Governors
the appointment of an Executive Secretary of
University Extension pending the establishment
of such Department.
4. That Senate approve as a temporary policy
governing adult education for the academic year
1935-56, the sending out of senior men from all
or any of the Departments of Economics, History,
Geology, English, Education, Forestry, Mining,
Agronomy, and Animal Husbandry, and from such
other Departments as the President may determine
on recommendation of the Executive Seoretary,
and that the resolutions of December 20, 1955, in
so far as they may conflict with this recommendation, be waived accordingly.
5. That Senate recommend to the Board of Governors
that the President be given the necessary
authority and be instructed to give effect to an
adult education program based on these resolutions and the reports of the Survey Committee
in so far as practicable for the 1935-36
academic year.
6. That Senate ask for a progress report from the
Executive Secretary to be presented at the
February (1936,) meeting.
Certain information that may be of assistance to
Senate and the Board of Governors dealing with such
questions as scope of activities, organization, payment
of staff members and so forth in other institutions, is
being gathered and will be submitted to members of the
governing boards shortly.
Having carried out, so far as possible, its assigned
task, your Committee respectfully asks that it be discharged. 431.

Mr. MacCorkindale) That the report of the
Committee be adopted.
Report of Senate Committee in reference to the President's
Letter of August 23rd, 1955 re conversation with Minister
of Education on Research
At a meeting of this committee on Thursday,
September 5th, the personnel of which is Mr. Sherwood
Lett, Chairman, Dr. Evlyn F. Farris, Miss A. B. Jamieson,
Dean Buchanan, Dean Clement, Acting Dean Turnbull, Mr*
H. N. MacCorkindale, the following recommendation was
unanimously endorsed.
Your committee recommend that Senate approve of the
proposal for conducting research into problems which have
a direct bearing on the industries of the province and
that Senate recommend to the Board of Governors that it
make special provision accordingly in the estimates for
195*-37 for conducting such research, provided that the
present standard of teaching and such research work as
may be necessary thereto be maintained.

1 Dean Clement) That whereas the action of Senate
on August 14th, 1935 in purporting
to elect three of its members to the
* Board of Governors, was premature,
the Order in Council not having
« been made until the 27th day of
August, 1935, and the proclamation
thereof not having appeared in the
f » Gazette until September 5th, 1935;
I Wherefore, be it Resolved
That we proceed to nominate and
* elect three members of Senate to
fill the vacancies in the Board of
I ^ Governors.

Dr. Evlyn F. Farris, Miss A. B. Jamieson and Mr.
Sherwood Lett were nominated by Dr. Killam.

Mr.   Oliver)   That nominations   close.
A ballot was cast by the Secretary, and the Chair
declared Dr. Farris, Miss Jamieson and Mr. Lett elected.

Mr. Lett ) That we adjourn.
