r Wednesday, December 29, 1943.
A special meeting of the Senate of the University of
British Columbia was held on Wednesday, December 29, 1943,
* at 8:00 p.m., in the Board and Senate Room.
Present:  President L. S. Klinck (in the Chair), Dean
F. M. Clement, Dean J. N. Finlayson, Dr. J. C. Berry, Dr.
G. H. Harris, Dr. H. J. MacLeod, Mr. F. A. Forward, Mr.
Walter H. Gage, Dr. 0. J. Todd, Mr. F. J. Burd, Dr. G. G.
Sedgewick, Mr. A. E. Lord, Dr. H. V. Warren, Dr. A. E.
* Grauer, Mrs. Sally Murphy Creighton and Miss Florence S.
Mulloy.
i Expressions of regret at their inability to attend
the meeting were received from Dean D. Buchanan, Dean M.
Dorothy Mawdsley, Mr. A. R. Lord, Dr. C. H. Wright and Dr.
John F. Walker.
* At the request of the Chair, the Secretary read the
^^       call of the meeting.
* From the Faculties
Reports in reference to Christmas Examinations
Faculty of Arts and Science
^ Dr. Sedgewick presented a report in reference to
the Christmas Examination results for the First and
^ Second Years in Arts and Science.  The report included;
(a) A summary of the results in First and Second
Years.
(b) A recommendation that certain students whose
work was unsatisfactory be required to discontinue attendance for the remainder of the
session.

Mr. Gage    ) That the recommendations of the
Faculty of Arts and Science be
approved.

Wednesday, December 29, 1943.
Faculty of Applied Science
Dean Finlayson presented a report in reference to
the Christmas Examination results in Applied Science
(including Nursing).  This report included:
(a) A summary of the results in all years.
(b) A recommendation that certain students in
Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Years be
required to repeat the year (withdraw at
Christmas).

Dr. MacLeod   ) That the recommendations of
the Faculty of Applied Science
be approved.

Faculty of Agriculture
Dean Clement presented a report in reference to
the Christmas Examination results in the Faculty of
Agriculture, containing the recommendation that certain
students in First, Second and Third Years be required
to repeat the year (withdraw at Christmas).

Dr. Harris  ) That the recommendations of the
Faculty of Agriculture be
approved.

Dean Finlayson) That the Chair be authorized
to make any necessary corrections in the reports on the
recommendation of the Deans.

For the information of Senate a list of students
reported to the Divisional Registrar, Mobilization Division,
National Selective Service, and to the District Officer 1005
Wednesday, December 29, 1943.
Commanding, was received.  This list included, by
Faculties, the names of men students of 18-^ years of age
or over, whose average on the work of the First Term was
below fifty per cent.
From the Faculty of Arts and Science
A recommendation was received from the Faculty of
Arts and Science that, in view of the change of date of
Dominion Day, 1944, announced by the Federal Government,
the Summer Session open on Monday, July 3rd, and close
on Friday, August 18th, 1944.

Dr. Warren  ) That this recommendation be
approved.

The Chairman of the Press Committee asked for instructions with respect to the release of information regarding
the Christmas Examination results.  It was felt that the
number of students reported to the Divisional Registrar and
the number required to withdraw from the University might
be given to the press, but that the actual percentage basis
should not be mentioned.
The Chairman extended to the members of Senate best
wishes for a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
The meeting adjourned.
