Wednesday, October 29th, 1919,
363 An adjourned meeting of the Senate of the University of
British Columbia was held on Wednesday, October 29th, at 8 p.m., in the
Board Room, at the University offices.
364 Present: The President, in the Chair; the Chancellor, Dean
Clement, Dean Brock, Mr. P. A. Boving, Mr. L. Killam, Dr. D. Mcintosh,
Dr. H. Ashton, Mr. T. A. Brough, Judge F. W. Howay, Dr. W. D. Brydone;-
Jack, Mr. W. P. Argue, Magistrate H. C. Shaw, Miss A. B. Jamieson,
Rev. W. H. Vance, Miss S. P. Clement, Mr. J. M. Turnbull and Mr. L. F.
Robertson, secretary pro tem.
365 Letters were read from Mr. J. S. Gordon and the Reverend
W. Leslie Clay, expressing regret at their inability to attend the
meeting. The letters were ordered filed.
366 Dr. Brydone-Jack presented the report of the Committee on
Nursing:
A. Your Committee recommends that Clause 3 of the Senate
minutes No.326 be amended to fead as follows:-
University Training:
The equivalent of the first two years of Arts, namely:
First Year: English 1 and 2, History 1, Mathematics 1
or Latin 1 or French 1, Physical, Chemistry 1, Biology 1.
Second Year: English 3 and 4, Chemistry 2, Philosophy 1,
Economics 1, Bacteriology 1 and 2.
B. Your Committee further recommends that in the final year
of their professional training one or more academic subjects,
bearing upon their future professional work, be required, being
strongly of the opinion that it is desirable to bring these
studehts under direct University influence and within the
University atmosphere during the close of their professional
training and before they have conferred upon them the
University degree. Your Committee therefore suggests that
this matter be referred to Faculty for a recommendation
along these lines.
C. In connection with Clause 5, Senate minutes No.326, your
Committee recommends the following conditions:-
1. That such hospital graduates shall have matriculated. (122)
2. That they shall be graduates of a hospital of the
standard laid down in Clause 3.
3. That they shall take, or shall have taken, the full
academic training laid down for this course.
4. That, except under special circumstances, a graduate
nurse must enter for this course within two years
of the time of graduating as a nurse.
5. That the privilege of entering for this course after
hospital training shall be withdrawn in 1925.
D. Your Committee approves of the Faculty recommendation No.2,
submitted to Senate on October 15th "That Miss Beatrice
Johnson and Miss Margaret Healy, applicants for admission to
the course in Nursing, be granted second year standing." The
remaining Faculty recommendations have been favourably
considered in the preceding recommendations.
E. Referring to the B. C. Hospital Association letter of
October 9th, 1919, your Committee is unable to act in this
matter, there being no course in Public Health in the University at present.

Mr. Robertson's amendment was accepted by Dr. Brydone-Jack
and Mr. Argue as the motion and carried.

the report.
Principal Vance, with the consent of his seconder, withdrew

367 Report of the Committee on Nursing, as amended by Senate:-
A. That Clause 3 of the Senate minutes No.326 be amended
to read as follows:
University Training:

Biology 1.
Second Year - English 3 and 4, Chemistry 2, Philosophy 1,

368 An application for the affiliation of the training School
for Nurses of the Vancouver General Hospital with the University of
British Columbia through the Departnert of Nursing was presented.

such time as the standard of the hospital is
determined.

Howay) That the Secretary write to the Medical Council of
British Columbia requesting the Council to draw up a
standard of qualifications for the guidance of
Senate in reference to proposed hospital requirements.

369 A letter was read from Dean Brock, submitting recommendations
from the Department of Nursing, re appointment of a Committee on
Standards for Training Schools for Nurses for this Province

Argue) Moved that the letter be filed.

370 The Secretary of Faculty reported that Faculty, as authorized
by Senate at its regular meeting on October 15th, had granted the
request of two High School Principals that an alternative paper on
the Latin Authors as prescribed for Intermediate Examinations, should
be allowed to candidates for Junior Matriculation instead of upon the
text prescribed.

371 A letter was read from Dean Clement setting forth the
impossibility of giving the short courses in Agriculture this session,
as announced in the calendar. (126)

Shaw ) That the letter be referred to the Board of Governors,
with an expression of regret at the situation in
which the Faculty of Agriculture finds itself; and
that action be delayed until we hear from the Board.

372 An application was received from Westminster Hall for
affiliation with the University of British Columbia.

Brydone-Jack) That a Committee be appointed, consisting
of Judge Howay, Magistrate Shaw and Dean
Brock to prepare a statute (for the purpose
of affiliation of incorporated theological
colleges with the University), in accordance
with the terms of the University Act.
Carried.
373 Moved by Mr. T. A. Brough, seconded by Mr. W. P. Argue, that
we, the members of the Senate of the University of British Columbia,
express our regret at the resignation of our former secretary, Mr.
George E. Robinson; our sense of the loss we sustain in his absence
from his familiar place; our realization of the value of his services
in this capacity as well as in many other ways; and our trust that he
may be granted many years of fruitful and happy labor in behalf of the
young manhood and womanhood of our University and our Province.

It was ordered that a copy of the resolution be sent to
Mr. Robinson.

Brough) That the Registrar act as Secretary of Senate in
accordance with the provisions of the University
Act.

Miss Clement)  That a resolution of condolence be sent to
Dr. T. H. Boggs, on the death of his wife.
