Friday, December 29, 1944.
A special meeting of the Senate of the University of
British Columbia was held on Friday, December 29, 1944, at
2:00 p.m., in the Board and Senate Room.
Present:  President N. A. M. MacKenzie (in the Chair),
Dean F. M. Clement, Dean J. N. Finlayson, Dean D. Buchanan,
Dr. J. C. Berry, Dr. G. H. Harris, Mr. F. A. Forward, Dr.
H. J. MacLeod, Mr. W. H. Gage, Dr. 0. J. Todd, Mr. H. N.
MacCorkindale, Mr. A. R. Lord, Rev. Dr. J. G. Brown, Rev.
Dr. H. R. Trumpour, Dean M. Dorothy Mawdsley, Dr. H. V.
Warren, Miss Isobel Harvey, Mrs. Sally Murphy Creighton,
Mr. L. A. Atkinson, The Most Rev. A. U. dePencier and Miss
Florence S. Mulloy.
Regrets for their inability to attend the meeting were
received from Chancellor 2. W. Hamber, Mr. F. J. Burd, Dr.
J. M. Ewing, Dr. A. E. D. Grauer and Mr. Eric W. Johnson.
From the Faculties
Reports on Christmas Examinations
Faculty of Arts and Science
Dean Buchanan presented a report on the Christmas
Examination Results in the Faculty of Arts and Science,
including Commerce and Home Economics.
The report included the following recommendations:
(a) That certain students in First and Second Year
Arts, Second and Third Year Commerce and Second
Year Home Economics be required to discontinue
attendance for the remainder of the session.
(b) That certain students in First and Second Year
Arts be required to reduce their courses to
nine units.

Dr. Todd    ) That the recommendations of the
Faculty of Arts and Science be
approved.

Friday, December 29, 1944.
Faculty of Applied Science
Dean Finlayson presented a report on Christmas
Examination Results in the Faculty of Applied Science,
including Nursing.  This report included:
(a) A summary of the results in all years.
(b) The following recommendations:
(i) That certain students in Second, Third and
Fourth Years in Applied Science be required
to repeat the year (withdraw at Christmas).
(ii) That one student in Second Year be required
to withdraw from the Faculty.
(iii) That certain students in Second, Third and
Fourth Years and one student in Second Year
Nursing and one student in Public Health
Nursing who failed be allowed to continue.

Dr. MacLeod   ) That the recommendations of the
Faculty of Applied Science be
approved.

Faculty of Agriculture
Dean Clement presented a report on Christmas
Examination Results in the Faculty of Agriculture.  The
report included the following recommendations:
(a) That one student in First Year Agriculture be
required to repeat the year (withdraw at
Christmas).
(b) That one student in Fourth Year Agriculture be
required to reduce her course to nine units.

Dr. Harris  ) That the report of the Faculty
of Agriculture be approved.

Dean Finlayson) That the Chair be authorized to
make any necessary corrections
in these reports.

For the information of the Senate a list of students
to be reported to the Mobilization Board was received.  This
included the names of all men students l8-§- years of age or
over whose average on the work in the First Term was below
fifty per cent, except that in the First Year only those
students required to withdraw were listed in the report.
In view of the fact that certain other universities do
not consider Christmas examinations as final and, therefore
do not make any report to the Mobilization Board at that
time:

Mr. Forward  ) That only those students who are
required to withdraw be reported
to the Mobilization Board and that
the names of the others listed in
the report be withheld until a
ruling is obtained from Mr. W.H.
Lea, Secretary of the University
Advisory Board.

It was agreed the total number of those asked to withdraw from the University might be reported to the press.

Courses for the Summer Session, 1945.
Mr. W. H. Gage, Director of the Summer Session, presented the recommendation of the Faculty of Arts and Science that the following tentative list of courses to be
offered in the Summer Session, 1945, be approved: 1090

courses be approved.

Curriculum Changes
Dean Buchanan presented the following curriculum
changes which had been approved by the Faculty of Arts
and Science:
Department of Economics, Politioal Science and
Sociology
That Social Work 20 (Seminar in Social Research) be
Changed to Social Work 20 (Social Research) - 2 hours
a week, one unit - to replace Social Work 11 which
was cancelled when Miss Bradford, the lecturer, left
for overseas service.
Department of Education
That a new course, Education 40 (Educational Sociology),
be offered.  This course to deal with the main features
of usual courses in Educational Sociology, with considerable emphasis on problems arising out of reconstruction and rehabilitation - three units. s

Department of Philosophy and Psychology
Owing to the leave of absence of Dr. Joseph E. Morsh,
it has been deemed advisable to withdraw Psychology 5
(Abnormal Psychology) for the Session 1944-45.

Mr. Gage     ) That these recommendations be
approved.

From the Faculty of Applied Science
The following recommendation of the Joint Faculty
Committee on Prizes, Scholarships and Bursaries, as
approved by the Faculty of Applied Science, was presented
by Mr. Gage:
"That the University Scholarship in Nursing and
Health ($175.00) be awarded to Miss Nancy Montgomery,
registered in the Third Year of the Nursing Course."

Dean Mawdsley) That this recommendation be
approved.
Carried
Dean Finlayson stated that he had received a letter
from Mr. Joseph S. Broadbent who is at present serving in
Italy with the R.C.A., in which he requested permission to
return to the University after the war and continue his
course in Applied Science.  Mr. Broadbent had been required
to withdraw from the Faculty in December, 1939*  The Dean
recommended that this request be granted and that he be
given permission to register in Third Year Applied Science
on his return to the University.

Mr. A.R.Lord) That the question of admission of
returned men to the University be 1092
