. The fourth regular meeting of the Senate of The
University of British Columbia for the session 1927-28

was held on Wednesday, Hay 9th, 1928, at 9:30 A.H., in

the Board Room.

1161 A letter from the Board of Governors was read in
reference to the details of administration relating to
the organization of the Summer Session and related courses.

Judge Lampman) That this communication from the
Board of Governors be referred to
the Committee of Senate for consideration.

A communication was received from the Faculties in
1162 reference to Bhe John Oliver Memorial Scholarship Fund.
In accordance with the letter of President Klinck
to Mr. Charles Bishop, Seoretary of the Victoria
Liberal Association under date of April 14th, the
University Committee on Prizes and Scholarships would
recommend the following as suitable terms on which
the proposed Fund might be offered to, and accepted
by, the University.
The proposed $1500,00 per annum should be
divided as followaj-
(a) $300.00 per year for Matriculation Scholarships
(b) For Postgraduate work, $1200.00 per year, more
or less, being the balance of the annual
income from the invested fund.
The $300.00 per annum, given for Matriculation
Scholarships, shall be divided into three equal parts:
one given to the student taking highest standing in
Junior Matriculation examination and entering the work
of the first year in the Faculty of Agriculture in
the University of British Columbia from each of the
following three districts:
(a) Victoria District and Vancouver District
(b) Vancouver Island (exclusive of Victoria
District) and Northern Mainland and the
Praser Delta (exclusive of Vancouver District
but including Agassiz)
(c) Yale and Kootenay,
all as distributed by the Matriculation Examination
Board.

The amount allotted for the Postgraduate Scholarships shall be more or less flexible in its disposal
from year to year.  It may be granted on occasion to
more than one graduate student and possibly for more
than one research project.  A holder must be a graduate of The University of British Columbia, not
necessarily in the Faculty of Agriculture, but the
research work must be done in problems of primary
interest in Agriculture.  The work may be pursued in
any University, not necessarily in The University of
British Columbia.  The award will be made upon the
recommendation of the University Committee on Prizes
and Scholarships, acting in consultation with the
Faoulty of Agriculture.
If these terms are accepted by the Donora and by
the University, the Committee on Prizes and Scholarships will submit for approval of Donors and Senate a
suitable statement for inclusion in the next
Univeraity Calendar.

The question was raised as to whether or not the
terms under which a scholarship is established were
final and unchangeable, or whether there should not be
a statute enabling Senate to open the question if at any
time circumstances should warrant.

existence or which may be passed.

Faculty of Applied Science:
That, in accordance with the informally expressed opinion of the Heads of Departments, 576.

the first year of the course remain, as at
present, First Year in Arts, and the remaining years be called Second, Third, Fourth and
Fifth Years in Applied Science.

Faculty of Applied Science:
1155 That upon approval of the Dean and the
Head of the Department concerned,
University credit may be granted for
work done outside the University under
the immediate supervision of the University staff, during the University
session.

The following recommendation was received from

That at least Second Class standing be
required in the subject or subjects of
the minor taken for the Master's degree.

Dr. Killam stated that he had not been an active
member of the Committee and wished to record a
difference of opinion in regard to the report.
Dean Coleman requested that the report of the
committee on Junior Colleges, passed a few months ago,
be considered by Senate when the matter is taken up
again, and suggested that the words "at this time" be
deleted.

in reference to the affiliation of Union College, giving
the opinion that there is nothing further to be done in
regard to the termination of affiliation of Y/estminster
Hall and Ryerson College with The University of British
Columbia. 578.
