Wednesday, May 6th, 1931
The fourth regular meeting of the Senate of The
University of British Columbia for the session 1930-31
was held on Wednesday, May 6th, 1931, at 9:30 a.m., in
the Board Room.
Present: Dean R. W. Brock, Dean F. M,   Clement, Dean
D. Buchanan, Mr. J. M. Turnbull, Dr. H. Vickers, Mr. H.
F. Angus, Dr. A. H. Hutchinson, Mr. G. W. Clark, Mr. P.
H. Elliott, Rev. Dr. J. G. Brown, Rev. Dr. W. H. Vance,
Dr. G. G. Sedgewick, Mr. H. T. Logan, Rev. Canon A. H.
Sovereign, Dr. Evlyn F. Farris, Mr3. Beatrice Wood, Dr.
C. Killam, Miss A. B. Jamieson, Mr. Sydney Anderson, and
Mr. Lyle A. Atkinson.

Mr. Turnbull) That Dean Brock take the Chair.

Expressions of regret at their inability to attend
the meeting were received from President Klinck and Mr.
J. N. Harvey.

Mr. Turnbull) That the minutes of the third
regular meeting of February 18th,
of the special meeting of March
4th, and of the adjourned special
meeting of March 18th, 1931, be
taken as read and adopted.

meeting of the Board of Governors
and Senate on April 10th, 1931,
be taken as read,and passed.
A list of students who had not paid their graduation fees as at the close of business on Tuesday, May
5th, 1931, was received from the Bursar. trr

Mr.   Clark)   That   the   results  be   passed   and  degrees
conferred  accordingly,   subject   to   the
payment   of   the   required  fee.
Sessional Examination Results
The Sessional Examination Results were presented:
Faculty of Arts and Science - by Dean Buchanan
Victoria College -  by Principal Elliott
Faoulty of Applied Science  -  by Prof. Turnbull
Faculty of Agriculture     -  by Dean Clement.
These were considered section by section and adopted.
Special consideration was given to the standing of
Mr. Don Hutchison, President of the Alma Mater Society,
who had made less than the required standing in two

his degree to enable him to pass
with his class in view of his
services for the University as a
Particular attention was called also to the standing
of John W. Fox with three extra units, a supplemental in
three units, and whose remaining units were not in
accordance with Calendar regulations.

Mr. Clark ) That the recommendation of the
Faculty with regard to Mr. John
W. Fox be approved.

Dean Buchanan placed before Senate a form of certificate which it was proposed should be given to students in
Arts and Science graduating with Honours.

Mr. Angus    ) That Senate authorize the issue of
a certificate for candidates in
Honours as proposed by the Faculty
of Arts and Science.
Medals,   Scholarships,   Prizes   and  Bursaries   for   1950-51
The  Faculty  of  Arts  and  Science   recommended   the
acceptance   of   the   Kiwanis   Club's   offer   of  a  Gold  Medal   to
the   student   taking  highest   standing  in  the   examinations
of  the  Fourth  Year  in   the   course   in  Commerce   for   this

Mr.   Angus        )   That   the   recommendation   of   the
Faculty   of   Arts   and  Science   be
Sessional  Awards
Award  of   medals;    open  prizes   and   scholarships;
scholarships   in Arts  and   Science,   Applied   Science   and
Agriculture;   and Bursaries   were   presented by   Dean  Clement,
Special   notice  was  taken   of   the   fact  that   two
students,  Malcolm Hayden  Hebb   and   Shirley   Isabelle   Mayse,
tied  for   first  place   in  the   Graduating  Class   in  Arts  and
Science   and  for  the   honour   of   the   Governor-General's
Gold  Medal. 140.

Dr. Farris) That this go to the press as it is
here, that the recommendation of
Faculty be accepted and that tomorrow the winners be given certificates.
The winners of the Rhodes Scholarship for 1931, and
the French Government Scholarship, book prize and bronze
medal, were announced to Senate.
Letters   from  the  Board   of   Governors  were   read
granting  approval   to   the   following   recommendations   of
Engineering  Institute   of   Canada  Prize
Graduating Book Prize   in Commerce
A   letter  was   also   received   for   information from  the
Board  of   Governors   in  reference   to   revision of   the
e stimates •
Notice   of  Appointment   of   Committee
re  Proposed   regulations   to  make   uniform  the
awarding  of prises   and   scholarships
Chairman  -   Dr.   D.   Buchanan

Mr.   J.   M.   Turnbull
Miss   A.   B.   Jamieson
Dr.   G.   G.   Sedgewick.
Application   of   fraternities,   Theta  Kappa   Rho   and   Tau
Lambda,   for   recognition
A  letter  was   received  from   the   Inter-Fraternity
Council  asking  that   official   recognition be   given   to   the
fraternities   noted   above. w

correct form and procedure.

That  Senate's   committee   on honorary
degrees  be   asked  to   consider   the
advisability   of   conferring  an
honorary  degree   on  the   Canadian
Minister   to   Japan,   Mr.   Marler*
Dr. Sedgewick)
Dr. Farris   )
That the question of the establishment of a Department of Home
Economics be deferred to the
special meeting of Senate which
will be called to consider
The meeting adjourned.
