Array MINUTES OF STAFF MEETING HELD IN THE
LIBRARIAN'S OFFICE ON FRIDAY,
JUNE 29, 1951, at 9:15 a.m.
Present: Miss Smith, Miss Jefferd, Miss Lanning, Miss Mercer,
Miss Rendell, Mr. Lanning, Miss Fugler.
The library hours for summer session were considered
and it was decided that the service departments should be open
as follows:
Circulation and Reference 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Periodicals 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
No decision has yet been made regarding evening hours.
A summary of regulations came from the Personnel
Office recently and copies have been distributed to the Division
Heads and a copy posted on the staff notice board. It is understood that.this is an interim set of rules, and that there will
probably be changes. In reply to a question, Miss Smith said
she believed that the regulations applied to the professional
library staff pending the completion of classification and the
possible establishment of a special status.
A number of staff changes have been made recently and
others will be made in the near future. Some time ago it was
arranged that Miss Mercer should become Acting Head of Acquisitions
during Mr. Rothstein*s leave of absence. To fill the position of
First Assistant in the Circulation Division, Miss Margaret
Mackenzie was promoted and will go to Circulation on her return
from her leave. Developments regarding the medical library have
made it necessary to assign someone to the medical library who
has had extensive organizing experience in that field, and Miss
Doreen Fraser will leave her position in Serials to take on this
work. Miss Vlag will leave the Medical Reading Room to become
senior librarian in the Reference Division. This move will become
effective on 1 August, at which time Miss Marjorie Alldritt
will join the Library as First Assistant in the Serials Division.
Miss Alldritt comes from the Library of Congress, where she has
had three years of valuable experience.
Miss Doreen Shockley, library assistant in Reference,
and Mr. Norman Broomhall, mail room clerk in Acquisitions, joined
the staff in June. Miss Doreen Taylor and Mr. Noel Owens will
start work as junior librarians in the Reference Division in July,
and Miss Georgia Phelan of Montreal will become junior professional
in the Acquisitions Division. Miss Beverly Harris will join the
Circulation Division on 3 July, and Miss Margaret Whitehall will
commence her duties as typist in the Catalogue Division.
Miss Mary Rendell has announced that she has made
application to be taken into the organization of the Anglican
Church, and if her application is accepted she will resign her
present position. Everyone expressed regret that Miss Rendell
expects to leave the Library, but wished her every success in the
new field she has chosen.
The problem of providing an orientation period for the
new staff members was considered. Miss Smith did not believe it ; " possible to allow a week in each division, as was done last summer,
and suggested a half day. After brief discussion it was agreed that
a half day of instruction in each division be given to the new
professional librarians.
Miss Smith reported that the bookplates for the Sedgewick
books had been ordered, and that as soon as they arrive and the
books can be put on the shelves an attempt will be made to put the
Sedgewick Room into use. It is hoped that the formal opening may
be arranged for early August, when the President and Mr. Harlow
are both expected to be on the campus. Miss Smith asked for the names
of persons who should be invited to attend. The problem of
maintaining the Sedgewick collection was mentioned, and Miss Smith
said she had in mind a request for a modest continuing allowance for
this purpose.
The meeting adjourned at 11:30 a.m.
