Array MINUTES OF MEETING OF DIVISION HEADS
HELD IN THE LIBRARIAN'S OFFICE ON
TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 1952, at 10 a.m.
Present: Mr. Harlow, Miss Jefferd, Miss Smith, Miss Lanning,
Miss Mercer, Mr. Lanning, Mrs. Sumpton, Miss Fugler.
FINES
The new scale of fines is now in effect and payment
of fines is to be made at the Accounting office henceforth.
There are bound to be some difficulties and adjustments, but since
every adjustment has to be communicated to Mr. White so that he
can alter his records, it is desirable to keep changes to a
minimum. Some bills, rendered on the old bill form, are still
being paid to the Library, but as soon as all outstanding accounts
have been re-billed on the new form the Library will not accept
payment; persons wishing to pay fines are to be referred to the
Accountant's office. Several difficulties have arisen in
connection with Teacher Training and Social Work students who go
out on field work and cannot return books on the due date. Most
of these students know when they borrow a book whether or not they
will be able to return it on time, and Mr. Harlow has asked the
staff at the Loan Desk and Reserve Desk to be as firm as possible
in dealing with special pleas. Special arrangements regarding
loans to Teacher Training students will be posted, and attention
will be drawn to them when books are loaned for an extended
period. The posting of the regulations will serve as notice to
borrowers against expecting special privileges or leniency and
will be an answer to arguments against enforcement of the rules.
Special privileges relating to Teacher Training and Social Work
material will pertain only to the specific items designated for
use by these groups and not to everything in the Reserve collection.
USE OF INTERCOM
In discussing the use of the intercom it was pointed out
by the Librarian that only library business should be transacted
over the system, since conversations often can be overheard by the
public. Some experimenting might help to eliminate certain kinks
in the use of the intercoms (voices too loud, interference between
conversations, et c.).
STACK EXIT LOCK
The first of these locks has been installed on stack
level 2 and keys have been provided for Miss Stewart, Miss Sayce
and Mr. Broomhall. The master key will also open this lock, but
Mr. Harlow asks that master keys not be lent indiscriminately.
LIBRARY COMMITTEE
The Librarian announced that the jurisdiction of the
Library Committee was to come under discussion at a meeting of the
Deans today. RECLASSIFICATION
Mr. Harlow asked the Division Heads to submit in
writing all requests for reclassifications of persons or
positions for whieh they can provide adequate justification. Full
descriptions of positions for which reclassification is requested
and data concerning special capacities or performance of individuals
in relation to their assignments should be included.
LIBRARIAN'S TRIP
Mr. Harlow announced that he would leave next week on a
visit to as many of the university libraries in Canada as time
would permit, ending his eastern journey at Chicago, where he will
attend the Midwinter meeting of the American Library Association,
returning via Los Angeles and Berkeley. He hopes to see former
1BG people who are attending Library School In eastern Canada.
The meeting adjourned at 11:15 a.m.
