Reporting Division Heads Meetings and Other Matters of Interest to
the University of British Columbia Library Staff

Miss Smith Returns from Leave
Miss Anne M. Smith, Assistant University Librarian, was given a warm
welcome by the Division Heads upon her return from an eight-month
leave of absence, most of which was spent travelling in Europe.
School of Librarianship Class of 1963/64
Dr. Rothstein announced that the School of Librarianship has
accepted a record number of students for its 1963/64 class ~
forty-six.
Prebindery Staff
With the resignation of Mr. Louis Medvedsky to accept a position in
the German Department, the staff of the Prebindery has now turned
over completely in recent weeks. Miss Lanning, with a generous
assist from Mr. Lanning, is carrying on under some difficulty, and
the cooperation which Division Heads have shown is appreciated.
Canada Council Grant
The University has received a grant of $280,000 from the Canada
Council to assist with the cost of filling in the stack well to  .
the rear of the present Library building. Construction is scheduled
to begin immediately after the conclusion of  classes next spring.
Preparations for Expanding into the New Stack Well
Preparatory to expanding into the new bookstack area, Mr, Branko
Blazicevic has been retained to clear the well and to dispose
of odd accumulation elsewhere in the building. Anyone having
suggestions for items to be discarded is requested to call them to
the attention of either Mr. Blazicevic or Mr. Bell.
Location File
Miss Dobbin announced that the new Location File, listing the
whereabouts of all volumes not in their regular places in the
main bookstacks, has been completed and is now in operation.
continued..... In order that the file can remain accurate, it v/ill be necessary
of course, for the cataloguing Department to be advised, when any
books are being shifted into or out of the main bookstacks.
Accordingly, the cooperation of personnel in all Divisions is
requested,
Gift from the H, R, MacMillan Family Fund
The University Library recently received a gift of $10,000 from
the H. R. MacMillan Family Fund for the purchase of books on
scientific explorations. This generous grant will enable the
Library to develop a truly outstanding collection in an area in
which we already had representative holdings.
Committee for the Appointment of a University Librarian
Dr. Ian McTaggart co'wan, Chairman of the Senate Library Committee,
discussed with the Division Heads the procedures which will be
followed by the Committee in its search for candidates for the
position of University Librarian, Efforts will first be made to
locate likely candidates outside the University, who will then be
considered along with several members of the present library staff.

Mr. Louis Medvecsky, Library Assistant in the Serials Division, '
effective September 13, 1963.
Miss Sharon Milrose, Library Assistant in the Acquisitions Division,
effective September 27, 1963.
