YELLOW SLIPS IN FACULTY ORDERS
Miss Lanning has made a place just inside the stack
entrance for the display of new books for about a week as they
come from the book trucks. The practice of inserting yellow
slips will be discontinued, and books may be borrowed at once.
Some recent books will also be accessible to undergraduates on the
Loan Desk counter, as at present.
AUTHORIZATION CARDS
These are available at the Loan Desk and are to be
required from University staff who borrow material for faculty,
ACCESS TO LIBRARY BUILDING AFTER REGULAR,. HOURS
Members of staff who need to be able to enter the building at other than regular working hours should apply to Fir. Harlow
for authorization cards'permitting them to do so (by September 1).
USE OF READING ROOMS ON WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY EVENING IN
SUMMER SESSION [
From the statistics available there appears to have
been an average of about 20 persons at all times in the reading
room during the extra two nights (Wednesday and Thursday) on which
the Library has remained open at Summer Session student request,
with about six persons in the stacks. The Librarian believed
that this might justify the extra hours but asked for other views. -2- "d
BINDERY RE-OPENS
The Bindery is operating again after staff holidays.
Mrs, Brewer is still on leave but is making a good, recovery.
FURNITURE REPAIRS
In order to avoid, confusion and loss of miscellaneous
parts it is recommended that articles needing repair be sent to
the receiving room"when the request for repair is made to the
Librarian's office*
SCRATCH PADS vs. 3" x 5" SLIPS
The 3" 3C 5" slips are considerably more expensive than
the miscellaneous scratch pads of var3/ing sizes, and the staff is
asked to use odd sizes of scratch pads for non-file purposes,
conserving the 3" x 5" for filing use. A supply of 3" x 5" pads
will be obtained.
MISS MARY GAVER
Miss Gaver, Professor of Library Science at Rutgers
University, will visit Vancouver and the Universit3^ Library some
time on August 24 or 25. Fliss Mercer will be responsible for
showing her through the Library in the absence of Fir, Harlow and
Dr. Rothstein.
PNLA
At the annual meeting of the Pacific Northwest Library
Association in Gearhart, Oregon, the following staff will participate: Fliss Alldritt is Chairman of a panel to discuss the ALA
Catalog Code Revision; Fliss Doreen Fraser will speak on medical
library servicer at UBC; Fliss Smith will attend as a Past President of the Association a dinner meeting honouring Fir. Ireland,
President of the CLA, and Fir. Richards, President of the ALA, both
being members of the PNLA. Fir. Harlow is Chairman of the Board of
Managers of the Pacific Northwest Bibliographic Center and will
conduct two meetings of the Board.
UBC-TV
On Wednesday, August 17, Fir. Harlow is to take part in
the "Cabbages and Kings" program on CBUT in the evening, with
Professor Northrop Frye of Toronto, of our Summer Session faculty.
The program will discuss "Books " in Canada, or related subjects.
"TROJAN WOMEN"
This performance on the Library steps was very successful and the setting admirable. It was a considerable inconvenience to the Library and its public, however, for over a week,
and any request for a repeat performance will be given very
careful consideration indeed. -3- h(p
TEACHERS OF ENGLISH 91
The Sedgewick Room provided an ideal setting for a talk
by Dr. Daniells and a display of books including those listed by
Miss Smith and Fliss Dwyer in their recently issued list of paperback books of interest to English teachers. The meeting was so
successful that Fir. Harlow would like to have similar ones
arranged for student audiences during the year,
Mr. HARRY CAMPBELL OF UNESCO
On August 3, Fir. Harry Campbell, UBC Arts '40, and now
head of the Clearing House Library Division of UNESCO, spoke
informally to the staff in the lounge. He described briefly the
place of the Library Division in the UNESCO organization and the
work of the Clearing House within the division. In response to
questions he indicated the role of UNESCO in exchange of material
and of personnel. The number and variety of questions showed a
lively interest on the part of the staff. The Social Committee of
the Staff Association served tea with practically no advance
notice, and a lovely time was had,,,
TRAVELLERS RETURN
Fliss O'Rourke and Fliss Taylor have returned after three
months abroad and Mr. Bell is back from a very successful two
