Library Tours
In recent years tours of the Library have been limited because
of inconvenience to readers and shortage of staff. Mr. Banham, University
Information Officer, ha" informed us that he continues to receive numerous
requests for tours of the Library from groups visiting the campus. It
was suggested that tours might be limited to certain months of the year
and to certain areas of the Library. It was also suggested that a "handout"
sheet might be prepared for the information of visitors. After discussion,
it was agreed that we might well give the matter of tours further consideration, trying to devise a scheme that would accommodate our visitors and,
at the same time, not seriously impede the work of the Library.
School of Librarianship Accredited
At the recent Mid-Winter meetings of the American Library Associa-
tionm it was announced that the School of Librarianship had been approved
by the Committee on Accreditation of the American Library Association.
Friends of the School will be pleased to learn that accreditation was
earned in record time - our congratulations to Dr. Rothstan and his
colleagues on the Faculty, and to the students*.
Recruiting Trip by Mr. Bell
Mr. Bell reported on his recent trip to eastern Canada to interview students who might wish to work in the Library. Six library school
students from Toronto indicated interest in coming to U.B.C, four from
McGill. Mr. Bell also described the dramatic increases in book funds,
staff, and buildings which the University of Toronto Libra ry is planning
for the near future.
Canadian Libraries Included in Expansion of ARL
The Association of Research Libraries has recently enlarged its
membership from forty-nine to seventy-two. Included among the new members
are McGill University and the University of Toronto. Membership in the
ARL is by invitation and is limited to major university libraries and to
certain other libraries whose collections and services are similarly
broadly based and are recognized as having national significance. kS
