University of British Columbia Library Bulletin
No. 52 September 21, 1970 Vancouver, B.C.
SOCIAL SCIENCE DIVISION:
Beginning with the fall term there will no longer be an attendant on duty in the Periodicals Floor 5 Service Area after 5 p.m., although a student assistant will be on duty all day
Saturdays. The periodical card files will be sent to the Information Desk at 5 o'clock, so
that they may be readily accessible to the librarians on duty.
If any division is anxious to dispose of outdated editions of Books in print or Publishers
trade 1ist annuals, the Social Sciences Division will be glad to have them.
NEW SUBSCRIPTIONS BOOK FUND:
This fund of $20,000 (for the budget year 1970/71) has now run out. We have therefore
transferred $3,000 from another fund to help out. It now appears that current approval of
new subscriptions may not take effect until January 1971 and may be paid out of the 1971/72
budget. In this connection it is perhaps noteworthy that the average price of British
periodicals has risen 33% since 1965, according to the Bowker annual, 1970, p. 33.
PERI0DICALS-/RENEWALS, REPLACEMENTS FUND;
■-? v
This fund is now overdrawn and stringent restrictions will have to be placed on its further^
use.
MACMILLAN LIBRARY:
New 'phone numbers: 3445 for Serials, Circulation, Reserve, and general information; 3609
for the Head of the Library and for reference service.
NEW SEDGEWI CK LIBRARY:
*- - II I III!- I
The architects and contractors are still at work on final design and estimates, and hope to
be ready for the meeting of the Board of Governors on October 6. Look for a hole in the Mall
thereafter.
ASSOCIATION OF RESEARCH LIBRARIES:
Mr. Stuart-Stubbs will be attending a meeting of the Board on October 8-9 in Bloomington,
Indiana.
U.B.C. CENTER f s 1 d FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION;
x U.B.C. Extension Department.
The above change of name is now in effect, and the Center's new location is on Chancellor
lj. Boulevard between Wesbrook and Newton Crescents. The telephone number remains 228-2181.
U.B.C. ON TV:
The first of the programs prepared by the Information Office appeared on September 15th,
at 7.30 p.m., on Channel 10. Subsequent programs will appear every Tuesday night at the same
time. Staff members with ideas for programs should send their suggestions to Mr. Myers at
the Information Office.
SENATE:
The first meeting of Seante was held on September 16th. A new Senate Library Committee will
probably be named at or before the next meeting of Senate on October 14th. The Senate
Committee on Academic Building Needs is commencing another review of building needs; the
Library will submit a brief by October 1st, renewing its claims. UBC Library Bulletin - page 2 __
NEW PERSONNEL PROCEDURES:
The following personnel procedures will start Monday, September 21, 1970:
1) All internal applicants for positions will fill out an "Application for Promotion or
Transfer" form and submit it in person to the Librarian's Office. Subsequently, all internal
applicants will be interviewed by the Administrative Services Librarian and, if eligible, by *,. ,
the appropriate Division or Subdivision heads. The Application Book will no longer be used.
■<
2) Vacant positions will be posted for internal applications for one week. During this
week external applicants as well as internal applicants may be interviewed. No selection wi 11"*
be made however, until the end of the week, and until all applicants have been interviewed.
< ■
3) A new "Notice of Vacancy" form will be used for posting vacant positions. The new form
will tell the applicants the qualifications required for the position, and will give them a
short job description, including working hours.
These changes arise out of suggestions made by the Ombudsman Committee.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESOURCES COMMITTEE: b i
The A.R.C. has been meeting weekly since its inception seven weeks ago. The functions and
operation of existing library committees have been examined, and in addition a number of
proposals from staff members have been received and discussed. A meeting was then held with
Mr. Stuart-Stubbs to consider A.R.C. recommendations, a summary of which will appear very
shortly in the News letter.
The A.R.C. at this time would like to solicit the help of all staff in assessing the need
for a library social arrangements committee. At the height of the recent beer bash quite a
few staff members indicated to Mr. Stuart-Stubbs that they would like to have occasional get-
togethers at Green Park, but that they thought that staff should, and would be willing, to pay
for these. The arrangement of such a function is quite simple. Green Park may be booked
through Physical Plant for $50.00; the Alumni Association has a system set up for ordering
beer, wine and ice, and has a regular corps of helpers; the licence is obtainable through the ,, „
President's Office and the R.C.M.P.; the music we can borrow. What possibly is needed is a
permanent committee to oversee details and to be responsible for the organization of these
functions. Please indicate your views of the above by checking the appropriate box below,
tearing the section off and returning it to the A.R.C., c/o the Librarian's Office.
