BOW TO SUCCEED AT THE INFORMATION DESK:
Telephone inquiry: uWhere is Watergate? - that is, I mean, where is Watergate at
U.B.C?"
The briefest of pauses for reflection produced the desired answer: *'The Walter Gage
Residences are situated ..."
An elderly man recently inquired at the desk for the "Words Department" and wished
to know the spelling and meaning of what he pronounced as "milady". Shown the dictionary definition of a term of address applied to a woman of noble birth or marriage, he
promptly asked what kind of a disease that might be. The distinction between "milady"
and "malady" was eventually established in a very public and repetitious conversation
conducted at full blast to overcome the questioner's apparent ear "decease".
