SERIAL RECORD IN THE CATALOGUING DIVISION:
The Original Cataloguing Division is considering the refiling of the Serial Record into
j*the Shelf List. (if we are able to expand the Shelf List this summer, the refiling could be
fione at the same time). If anyone has any reactions or comments, would he please notify
rMeg Little, Freda Bailey or Mac El rod.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE LIBRARY DUPLICATING, PRINTING AND PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE, 1971/72:
The Library Duplicating, Printing and Publications Committee was struck to identify the
categories of expenditure included in this fund, to provide fiscal control over expenditures,
*to obtain the greatest benefits from the funds available and to establish and maintain standards for Library publishing.
The Committee ascertained that there were three categories of outside printing: Library
forms, publications and Library cards.
Don Dennis and Gerry Dobbin undertook the systematization of Library forms. All Library
-forms were examined to establish volume and printing specifications. Forms were classified UBC Library Bulletin

in regard to use, and those requiring outside printing were organized into books for bidding
purposes, which is now done at the beginning of each fiscal year.
Library publications will become the responsibility of a Public Service sub-committee
with fiscal control exercised by Doug Mclnnes.
Library cards constituted kS% of printing in 1971/72. A separate budget code has been
established for catalogue card reproduction, and production of cards will no longer be considered as part of printing.
A guide to the preparation of U.B.C. Library reference publications has been prepared
by Elsie de Bruijn and approved by the Committee. Mrs. de Bruijn, who also acted as Editorial
Consultant during this initial period, has asked to be relieved of this position, and
Mrs. Lillian Mclntyre has agreed to take her place.
Since the Committee has now accomplished its main objectives, knowledge and control of
Library printing and publications, the main Committee wi11 meet only once a year to consider
budget and to review the preceding year's activities. Don Dennis and Gerry Dobbin will
continue to exercise control over Library forms, and Doug Mclnnes and the Sub-Committee,
chaired by Lillian Mclntyre, will authorize Library publications and maintain standards.
(Signed): I.F. Bell, Chairman.
BOOKS IN THE BINDERY:
Prebindery has asked that the following be publicized:
Students are once again being referred directly to Prebindery in search of
titles listed on the print-out as "in the Bindery". Past experience has shown
that this is not a good procedure to follow. Indeed in some cases it has caused
direct conflict between the student searcher and the librarian in charge of the
division where the title is normally housed. If the print-out shows that the volume
is in the Bindery, ask the division responsible to check out the actual disposition
of the title. If for some reason a user should be referred to Prebindery. he
should be accompanied by a staff member, and in the case of a faculty member
preferably by a librarian. Prebindery may not hand out material entrusted to
them to any but authorized personnel from the sending division.
