University of British Columbia Library Bulletin
No. 82 May 26, 1972 Vancouver, B.C.
U.B.C. COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE:
The University Health Services are now known as the U.B.C. Community Health Centre.
The Centre operates on a fee-for-service basis, which, of course, includes pre-paid insurance
plans, and is located in Room 209 of the Wesbrook Building (2nd. floor). For an appointment
telephone 228-3149.
YELLOW HIGHLIGHTING ON CATALOGUE CARDS:
For several months yellow highlighting has replaced ticking to indicate subject and
series entries. "DISCARD" slips are now having their filing entries indicated in the same
way. Subject and added entries are highlighted in the tracing; series, title and main entries
are highlighted where they appear on the slip. Shelf list discard slips have the call number
highlighted.
RESIGNATION - SUPPORTING STAFF:
The pay of supporting staff members who resign before the end of the month is calculated
as follows:
The Payroll Office assumes every month to have 22 working days. The monthly salary is
thus divided by 22 to give the daily rate, which is then multiplied by the actual number of
days worked to arrive at the salary for the partial month up to the severance date.
SERIALS - REPLACEMENT ORDERS:
The following request has been sent out from ihe Serials Division:
"We have recently discovered that before a backfile order could be sent out, a good
deal of time is spent on establishing whether the issues or volumes required have previously
been received on the Serials System. To extract this information from the machine record,
we need to go through a complicated process which requires five to seven days.
You could eltminate this wait ing per iod by adding the notes ' replace miss ing ' or
'replace worn* when filling in the orders. Give us the information whenever you know.
"Thank you for your co-operation."
THE SHORT WORK WEEK:
Because of continuing interest in the idea of a short work week a library task force,
approved by the Librarian, will reconsider a voluntary short work-week proposal. Early in
the year the original plan submitted to the University Personnel Office was turned down,
principally because it contravened the B.C. Hours of Work Act, which stipulates that anyone
employed in an industry may not work more than eight hours daily or 44 hours weekly. But
can the U.B.C. Library be classified as an industry or is it more closely allied to the B.C.
government's civil service, in which the four-day work week has already been introduced
experimentally in the medical services section?
Before a new brief may be submitted to the Univer-ity Administration the Task Force
must support its proposal with good documentation regarding (a) other libraries in Canada
and their experiences (if any) with the short work week, (b) possible amendments to the
B.C. Hours of Work Act, and (c) possible exemption from the Hours of Work Act regulations.
Please answer the following questionnaite and return it by June 9, 1972, either to
Claudia Kerr, Catalogue Maintenance, or to Rita Butterfield, Circulation Division:
A. Are you in favour of reinvestigating the possibilities of a voluntary short workweek
for U.B.C. Library? _ Yes No
B. Would you be willing to do some work as a member of the Library Task Force?
M yes: Name Division
