Fall 2001
LIBRARY NEWS
Update - The Chapman Learning Commons
The construction and renovations are well underway on the 5th floor of Main Library and should be wrapped
up by late December. The Learning Commons will be 'open for business' in the New Year and promises to be
a hub of activity, offering one of the first wireless site on campus, a laptop lending program, 34 flat screen
computers with access to Word, Excel and Powerpoint, and a comfortable and dynamic learning space in the
Library.
A wide range of programs will be offered through the Learning Commons, including a peer assistant
program called Leaders in Learning, workshops galore in the Dodson Room, including AMS Tutoring and
Academic Success. To support the services and programs in the Learning Commons, Information Services
will be moving to their new home on stack level 5 of the Main Library. Drop in and say hi!
The donors who are making this space possible, Dr. Lloyd and Mrs. Kay Chapman, visited the Library in
October and took a tour of the Commons. They were thrilled with our progress, both in construction and
programming, and at the remarkable transformation of the concourse. The Chapmans will visit us again for
the official opening early in 2002.
Be sure to check out the Learning Commons Web page currently under development at
www.library.ubc.ca/learningconunons.
Research Data Centre - Koerner Library
The British Columbia Interuniversity Research Data Centre is
now open and operating in Koerner Library, Room 202. The
Centre is jointly sponsored by UBC, Simon Fraser University
and the University of Victoria, with infrastructure funding from
the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, to provide access to
confidential Statistics Canada microdata files. A Statistics
Canada employee, Lee Grenon, runs the Centre. Faculty and
Graduate students from the three universities with projects
approved by Statistics Canada and the Social Sciences Research
Council are eligible to use the Centre. An official opening is
planned for mid-December. More information is available on the
Lee Grenon and researchers in the BCIRDC Centre's Web page (www.data.library.ubc.ca/.rdc/).

UBC at Robson Square
Construction is underway at UBC's new downtown campus, UBC at Robson Square, in preparation for the
facility's opening November 30th. The Library will have a significant presence there, sharing space with the
bookstore, as one of the first services you encounter as you enter the new campus.
Because our space is on the small side, the majority of resources at the Robson Square Library will be
'virtual', with few print materials being housed on site. Students at Robson Square, like their counterparts
at Point Grey, will have access to numerous publications with the click of a mouse. Users will be able to
request interlibrary loans as well as ask for materials to be delivered from Point Grey to Robson Square.
There are six public computers as well as study carrels and two group study tables. A new Robson Square
library Web page is now accessible from the UBC Library's branches page.
The Robson Square campus will be a dynamic facility. To showcase the programs and services available, the
university is hosting an open house November 30th and December 1st. The Library is organizing several
activities for this event, including a display of materials from the Chung Collection, a lecture by Dr. Wallace
Chung, a powerpoint presentation from University Archives, and an interactive online treasure hunt. Watch
for details about the open house in the Vancouver Sun and The Province, and on the Robson Square Web
page, www.robsonsquare.ubc.ca. There will be door prizes, music and entertainment - even a robot waiter!
Robson Square is located at 800 Robson Street, right next to the Vancouver Art Gallery. The main entrance
is just off the skating rink (below street level). And the good news is - the skating rink is to remain a
skating rink, thanks to the facility's 'landlord', the BC Buildings Corporation!
