Japanese Maps of the Tokugawa Era

Bankoku no zue

Description

Cover attached; title from cover. This map has been influenced by Koyano's 萬國一覽圖Bankoku ichiranzu, 1809. Some European countries appear as islands in the north polar sea; North and South American states are strung in a long line. Remarkably transformed shape of the world with Japan at its center. Outlines of continents are greatly distorted despite the use of latitute and longitude, and an explanation of the degree concept. The paper used is thicker and coarser than usual. Cited in: WSN; 145
