Japanese Maps of the Tokugawa Era

[Kyō ōezu]

Description

Date based on inscription "Makino, Governor of Sado Island, resides here." The white blocks on this map show that it is after 1686. Shoshidai (Governor) of Kyoto is Makino Sadonokami 1724-1734, not the earlier one of this name who was Governor between 1654-1668. See Motoji Kurita, Nihon ni okeru kokan toshizu (Old Japanese printed plans of cities) in Nagoya bungaku kenkyū ronshū, vol. 2, 1952, p. 5. Title, on cover, is a later manuscript addition.
