Scherzo à la russe Stravinsky, Igor, 1882-1971

Description

Autograph fourteen-page calligraphic transparencies of Scherzo à la Russe arranged for two pianos by Stravinsky and signed: "June ([19]44." pp. 1-2, 6, and 8-14: 30.2 x 24.2 cm; pp. 3-4: trimmed to 29.7 x 24.2 cm; p. 5: reassembled to 30.2 x 24.2 cm; p. 7: reassembled to 30.5 x 24.2 cm. Writing in black ink and with some traces of pencil on ten- and twelve-stave transparency paper for purposes of reproduction, Stravinsky added page numbers 2-14 at the top centre. Traces exist of previous autograph page numbers (now erased) "2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7" on the upper corners of pp. 2-7, only. He inscribed the title "Scherzo a la Russe" in a kind of art-deco style on p. [1], signing at the right "Igor Strawinsky / 1943" and he printed in a slightly more formal hand on its lower left side "Copyright by Igor Strawinsky 1944." Cut and reassembled by him, pp. 5 and 7 of "Trio 1" suffered damage from his use of transparent tape. On p. 4, lower right, and mostly erased between the staves of piano 2 is: "IStr." and below it on the lower staff is: "21:4-43 or "2/:4-43" (perhaps signifying 1943 as the year of copying pp. 1-7). On p. 9, upper left margin to the left of Piano I, appears in pencil (visible only under ultra violet light): "6 25" (?=June 25). On p. 14, lower right, is "I Str. / June 44 / Hollywood."
