For steamer “Seira [sic] Nevada”
Victoria V.I. 23. 1862
Royal Fisk Esq
Dear Sir
Your favors of the 13 & 17 duly received
Enclosed please find WF & Co
& Co [sic] check for the sum of five hundred Dollars No 799
which please place to my credit. I do not know of
anything I want unless it is butter which you
can purchase and ship as opportunity offers
I have done better on butter than on any thing else
and shall try and keep in it. Our trade has been
very lively on the Staples flour. 12 to 14 Rice 6½ to 8c
Beans 9 to 10. Oregon bacon 20c ____ 10 to 14c
Other goods have not been very lively but they will
Start up Soon. I have just had a conversation
with Mr Knight of Wells Fargo & Co and think I can
make an increase to my commission business with
your assistance. I propose to insert in your news
papers an advertisement that I will (through you)
make cash advances on merchandise shipped to me
on commission. On an application you will
Examine the goods very carefully and decide
on the amount that would be Safe to make and
when the goods are shipped and insured transfer the B/L &c [Bill of Lading etc]
to Wells Fargo & Co and draw a draft
on me payable on the arrival of the vessel

You can advance on all kinds of goods except
liquors which I would not advise any one
to ship to this market as we are abundantly
supplied from England. But on any other
goods that you with your knowledge
think will sell here make the advances
W F & Co will charge 2½ per cent commission
which will cover int & all to the date of the
arrival of the Vessel. I will then charge 2½
per cent a month untill [sic] reembursed [sic] from
Sales. Or if it was only a few days would
not charge anything. You will have to have
all these matters understood. You will also
see as to the amount of trouble & time and
see what you will have to charge me.
In regard to my commissions I get here from
5 to 10 per cent & other charges such as advertising [etc]
added on any straight lot of staple goods
I could not charge over five per cent but on
any lots that have to be peddled but I
should have to charge more. You will
please call and see Mr Knight as soon as
he arrives & have a conversation with
him that you may fully understand each other
I enclose you an advertisement which you can
alter if it does not suit you. Yours [etc] James McCrea
PS Send me 50 ps [pieces] China Matting if you can get it in bond. assd [sic] sizes check.
J A McCrea
