Notes |
The individual who created the illumination is identified as the Saint Louis Master, a known associate of Paris illuminator and libraire Jean Pucelle (cf. Mie Kuroiwa, “Working with Jean Pucelle and His Successors: The Case of the Saint Louis Master (Mahiet?),” in Kyunghee Pyon and Anna D. Russakoff (eds.), Jean Pucelle: Innovation and Collaboration in Manuscript Painting (Turnhout: Brepols, 2013), pp. 111-129, at p. 129).
The parent manuscript was purchased by Philip Duschnes at a Sotheby’s auction on 6 July 1964. He subsequently broke the book and offered individual leaves for sale, for the first time in his catalogue 169 (1965). The host manuscript was possibly owned by St Albans Abbey (cf. Christopher de Hamel, “Leaf of a Bible Manuscript,” in Fine Books and Book Collecting, eds Christopher de Hamel and Richard A. Linenthal (Leamington Spa: James Hall, 1981, pp. 10-12). |
