Group portrait of the No.1 Hook and Ladder Company of the Vancouver Volunteer Fire Department in 1888.
The caption on margin is written by the major, Jame Skitt Matthews, who was appointed as City Archivist of the Vancouver City Archives in 1933.
His handwritten annotation on recto reads, "Presented, 10 Nov. 1941, by Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Tupper. 1969 West 10th. Mrs. Tupper is a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. William McGirr. City Archives. Top row, centre man with beard, Wm [William] McGirr. Middle row: end man, on right: P. Larson, and end boy below him, Wm [William] McGirr, junior. Remainder unknown, but most Frenchmen.

Uniform: Thick hard leather helmet with metal helmet plate with embossed "1". White leather belts with light blue trimmings with figure "1" on leather keeper (metal clasp beneath keeper). Leather plaited (helmet band) chin strap wound on helmet (all purchased in eastern Canada). Shirt of red flannel without embroidery. Dark blue, almost black velvet collar and cuffs with half inch white braid, and embroidered with hook and leather, and "Vancouver" arched above "H" and "L", with "Company" in base. Studded with embroidered white but-tons. The shirt, cuffs, collar and shield were all hand needlework, and made and embroidered by Mrs. William McGirr, wife of company captain; others may have assisted. Authority: Hugh E. Campbell, Birch St, an original member of Fire Brigade, who, Oct. 1941, still treasures his red shirt."
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Tupper donated this photo to the City of Vancouver Archives in 1941.
