Sunny Side Hotel [unknown]
Description
Image of the Sunny Side Hotel on 1 Water Steert.
The caption on margin is written by the major, Jame Skitt Matthews, who was appointed as City Archivist of the Vancouver City Archives in 1933.
His handwritten annotation on recto reads, "Sunnyside Hotel, northwest corner, Water and Carrall Streets 1887. An earlier "Sunnyside Hotel", celebrated as the place of many historic incidents in the days of old Granville, was destroyed in the Great Fire of 13 June, 1886. This building replaced it, but never acquired the fame nor consequence of its predecessor. Both stood partly on land and partly on piles over the beach & water. The two story house at back faced the "City Wharf", and was a Chinese wash house or laundry. The C.P. R. single track main line was on a wood pile trestle bridge along the beach, and the right-of-way adjoined. The saloon-beer, 5 cents, whisky, two for 2.5 cents, and help yourself - was on the corner next came the Dining Room; and "Dressmaking" was done in two storey addition on left. Then came a barber, and on extreme left, Von Volkensberg [Von Valkenburg], (or A.R. Coughtery) butcher shop. Water St. was planked. Sewage was the sea. Water was obtained from a well. Then had a telephone, and Aug.1887, got electric light. The proprietor, William McGirr, is the man, with heavy beard, in centre. Photo presented, Nov. 18, 1949, by Mrs Thomas McGirr, 2332 W.47th. City Archives. J.S.M."
