J.Fred. Hume & Co. [unknown]

Description

A group portrait taken in front of J. Fred Hume & Co. general store.
The caption on margin is written by the major, Jame Skitt Matthews (J.S.M.), who was appointed as City Archivist of the Vancouver City Archives in 1933.
His handwritten annotation on recto reads, "Fred Hume & Co., Revelstoke, then known as Farwell, probably 1885. J. Fred Hume was Minister of Mines, 1898-1899, and for four years before that a member of Provincial Parliament (M.P.P.). He went to "Second Crossing", via the Big Bend Columbia River, in a very early year, and was in business at Farwell in 1885. Before 8 Apr. 1889, the day his cousin, C.B. Hume, arrived to manage his store for him, Mr. Hume went to Nelson, B.C., on the S.S. "Despatch" [also known as the S.S. Dispatch]. The log store at Farwell was located on the river side of the Main St., later called Front St. Under various arrangements, the two Messrs. Hume continued to operate stores at both Revelstoke & Nelson for many years. The "Hume Hotel", Nelson B.C. was built by J. Fred Hume & his brother Horace. Farwell, now called, "Lowertown" at Revelstoke, is on the flat beside the Columbia River, at the east end of the railway bridge.
