Description
Photograph showing three men with hats, sitting in a horse carriage under a hallow cedar tree.
Mrs. Thomas McGirr donated this photo to the City of Vancouver Archives in November, 1949.
The caption on margin is written by the major, Jame Skitt Matthews (J.S.M.), who was appointed as City Archivist of the Vancouver City Archives in 1933.
His handwritten annotation on recto reads, "1889-1890. One of the few sights of Vancouver at that time. Kitsilano, Shaughnessy and much of Mt. Pleasant was forest; Fairview, Grandview, and the West End were largely unoccupied clear-ing. There was "nowhere" much to go; nothing much to see". So visitors were taken for a drive around Stanley Park, and shown the "Big Hallow Tree"; it was one of the sights no visitor was permited [permitted] to miss.
