A group portrait taken in front of C.F. Foreman Wholesale and Retail Grocer.
Mrs. Thomas McGirr donated this photo to the City of Vancouver Archives in November, 1949.
The caption on margin is written by the major, Jame Skitt Matthews (J.S.M.), who was appointed as City Archivist of the Vancouver City Archives in 1933.
His handwritten annotation on recto reads, "Westminster Ave and Princess Street, circa 1890, now northeast corner main and Pender St. east. The street car rail indicated that photo was taken after 1890s. C.F. Foreman, general store. Observe wood plank side walk; grass and stones in ditch; Macadam road the "City Grocery", was a high class grocery.
Presbyterian Church. Dakin's Fire map, Nov. 1889, folio 16, shows the corner of this buildings as "Presbyterian Church" (perhaps upstairs). The man in white apron at door appears to be Thomas Duke, Manager, well known citizen. In 1889 Westminster was the second most important retail street in Van�ct [Vancouver City]. See Photo C.V.STR.N.145P.232. Presented Nov.18, 1949, by Mrs. Thomas McGirr, 2332 West 47th Ave. City Archives J.S.M."
Handwritten inscription in white reads, "Devine".
