Nepal's Constitution (II): The Expanding Political Matrix International Crisis Group

Asia Report N°234

Discusses the ever-broadening landscape of Nepali political parties in the face of the end of the Constient Assembly's four year term and their failure to produce a constitution. Calls for federalism and the rise of identity politics have further fragmented political parties, as has the split of the Maoist party which was formerly the lasrgest political party. This factious political landscape will likely have ramifications for Nepal's peace process, while ethnic politics distract politicians from the work of writing a constitution.
