Dear Harry:
In response to your letter of II4. September, brochure and
sketches covering Holland Hitch Co. tfMark Vl! landing gear for
heavy trailers is enclosed. This is the general type that we
use on our heavy-duty trailer equipment. In lieu of the circular pads, we use a larger, rectangular !rsand shoe11 which
gives more bearing surface.
We also use "Austin11 and HBrinkleyfl landing gears, which
are similar to the ^Holland1*.
I hope this Information will be- of value to you.
S
It was pleasant to have a visit with you the other day.
The Port of Seattle Commission formally approved your new one-
year lease for Pier Gli yesterday without dissent. It is our
hope that a more modern facility will be available before too
much longer.
Best Regards,
iS

 HOLLAND'S NEW marked GETS
THE LANDING GEAR OUT OF A JAM!
"SHAFT IN A BEARING" EASTMAN* SCREW/
NUT PRINCIPLE ELIMINATES BINDING,
REDUCES FRICTION AND TORQUE,
SAVES WEAR AND TEAR
Holland's new Mark V 2-Speed Landing Gear
features an entirely new Eastman screw/nut
thread principle. The Mark V raises and lowers easily — smoothly — with minimum
torque and binding. Conditions of misalignment that cause grinding friction in conventional screw/nut assemblies cannot get the
Mark V in a jam.
Picture the conventional screw/nut assembly
in the ordinary landing gear. When there is
misalignment, which is the rule rather than
the exception, the top and bottom threads
carry far more than their share of the load.
This is shown in the diagram on the opposite
* Patent applied for.
page. The result: thread jamming, severe
wear, high torque or crank input. It can't help
but happen \n a conventional screw/nut assembly. Now picture the Mark V trailer
support using the new Eastman screw/nut
assembly. This heavy duty VA" screw thread
will support 10,000 lbs. per inch of contacting thread. The threads can't plow across
each other. You can appreciate the savings in
maintenance and replacement.
As for efficiency, the Mark V is one of the best.
At low speed it requires only 25 turns per inch
of lift: high speed, 4 turns per inch. And the
old problems of grinding friction and torque
are gone.
Ask for a demonstration of the Mark V Landing Gear. Check with your Holland distributor,
or write the Holland Hitch plant nearest you.

This is the Two-Speed Landing Gear that has been engineered for all-around practicality. All of the features most
desired in a standard landing gear have been incorporated,—
unbreakable strength with low weight, ruggedness with compactness, fast operation with greatest of ease and convenience.
Cast Steel and Welded Tubing construction. Gear Box is of
special streamlined design with mounting plate for either inside (V-1000-C) or outside (V-1000) installation. Crank
shaft is placed below connecting shaft to gi\e greater clearance from trailer rub rail. For quality, efficiency and maintenance economy the V-1000 has no peer. Note the several
variations that are available in standard units; any further
variation will be tailored to your order. Assembly drawings
sent promptly on request. See Accessory Pages for optional
equipment.

this is easy this is the problem
Any landing gear can be made to operate with minimum friction and
binding when the nut and screw are in perfect alignment—which doesn't
happen very often. Landing gears are not always used under ideal conditions. Unequal distribution of load weight or uneven terrain will frequently thrust the landing gear screw and nut out of alignment. The
historically accepted design of these parts under misaligned conditions
can cause extreme friction and wear as shown at pressure points P. In
the simplified sectional view of a conventional screw/nut assembly in
misalignment, the angular displacement of the screw is apparent. Jamming of the treads is created when the screw is rotating in raising and
lowering operations. Torque is increased; wear and tear are inevitable.
Conventional thread design becomes a maintenance man's nightmare.

assembly is like a shaft turning freely in a bearing. There is
no place for jamming to occur, no extreme friction and wear,
no excessive torque problems. Additionally, permanent lubrication is
simply the new Eastman screw/nut combination- a unique
design that answers a long standing problem.
