L
 CANADIAN PACIFIC RAIL WAX COMPANY
British Columbia Coast Steamship Service
BUDGET VERSUS ACTUAL - AUGUST 1955
MEMORANDUM OF EXPLANATION OF
VARIATIONS FROM ESTIMATE
 (MAJOR ITEMS)
Deck Crew Wages - Over $2.355
This was due to a heavy increase in deck crew overtime, and to more
activity of barges than anticipated.
Fuel Consumed and Tax - Under 14.106
Consumption of the "Princess of Vancouver" was considerably lower than
anticipated. For most of the other vessels small decreases from estimate
were apparent*
Maintenance - Under 15.573
Frovisidn pas made in the budget for the cost of modification of
'•Transfer No. 4* out charges were not available and no amount was
taken up in August,
Stewards* Crew Wages - Under #3,332
Some economies were carried out in this department since the budget
was prepared, mainly on the "Princess Elisabeth" and "Princess Joan".
Buffet - Over $5.089
Due to increased bar sales.
Pursers* Department Wages -» Over $2.9A2
It was not possible to effect all anticipated economies in this
department on the vessels on the Triangle Service.
^Vages - Vancouver iharf Freight Office - Under 12.454
A purvey of the services rendered by this office has resulted in a
lower proportion of the payroll cost being assessed against the B.C.C.S.S.
Advertising - Under &9»582
Usual debit from the Department of Public Relations was lower than
normal for August, It is apparent, however, that charges for September
will be correspondingly higher, thus adjusting the picture in the
accumulative total.
Pension Department - Under 12^05,3
Due to recredit of amounts charged to Canadian National Steamships
under terms of the joint venture.
VICTORIA, B.C. 5th October. 1955.

The only change in schedule which would have materially
effected our position would be the earlier commencement of the full
Triangle service this year.
In 1954 the "Pr .Marguerite" commenced the Seattle-
Victoria and return service on April 25th. The *Pr.Patricia* was
started on the Vancouver-Victoria and return day service on May 21st,
relieving the "Ft. Elaine*. We can therefore say, that despite the
official schedule which stated that the full Triangle commenced June 1st,
that such full service went into effect with the departure of the ffPr.
Patricia" from Victoria for Vancouver an May 21st, each vessel keeping
to either the U.S, er Canadian leg without going right through* The
extra expense of the large ship over the MPr.Elaine" would be approximately
#800 per day, and for 29 days the extra expense would amount to .23,200.
To what effect our net would show Is problematical as it depend whether or
not the larger ship would attract greater patronage, but it would be safe
to assume that we lost about .500 per day by the earlier inauguration of
the triangle service or about .15,000. for the period.

PROPOSED ANNUAL OVERHAUL AND RELIEF PROGRAMME - 1955
(Revision of November 24th Proposal)
-2 -
PRINCESS MARGUERITE
PRINCESS PATRICI4
PRINCESS OF ALBSRNI
Now laid up at Victoria. To complete annual overhaul in
readiness to re-enter service to relieve "Princess of Nanaimo"
on Vancouver-Nanaimo route taking 21:00K sailing from Nanaimo
on Tuesday, April 12th. Then commence Triangle Route from
Vancouver on morning of Sunday, April 24th.
Will be laid up out of service as from December 28th 1954.
To complete annual overhaul in readiness to commence Triangle
Route from Seattle on morning of Sunday, April 24th.
Vessel will be laid up at Victoria for overhaul on arrival
from the West Coast, Martfh 29th or 30th, until April 6th.
To facilitate this, schedule sailings of March 18th and 29th
will be changed to March 16th and 24th. Upon completion overhaul, vessel will sail from Victoria night of April 6th for
Vancouver, and from Vancouver night of April 7th for Victoria,
departing Victoria as per printed schedule, April 8th, for
West Coast.
NOTE: It will be noted that the foregoing lay-up proposal ensures that "Princess
of Nanaimo" will be in service over Easter weekend. It is not desirable to
take "Princess of Nanaimo" out of service for overhaul in month of February
as this would involve additional expense in bringing out "Princess
Marguerite" and afterwards lay-up again. The arrangements as proposed will
therefore only permit a very short overhaul period for "Princess of Nanaimo"
as it will be necessary to return this vessel to service at such time to
enable "Princess Marguerite" to commence on Triangle Foute April 23rd.
Special arrangements will therefore have to be made for overtime work and
outside assistance in order to complete all necessary surveys and renovation
on "Princess of Nanaimo" in the time allotted.
VICTORIA. B. C. JANUARY 11th. 1955.
