SOUVENIR COPY OF THIS MENU CARD IN ENVELOPE READY FOR MAILING MAY BE HAD ON APPLICATION TO DINING CAR STEWARD "The Signal Tower"
THE signal tower of the Windsor Street Station in Montreal
is the culmination of a steady effort, maintained ever since
the first train ran on Canadian Pacific rails, to attain the
utmost possible certainty and efficiency in the signalling system,
on which train safety so largely depends. It has 68 levers and
is operated by electric power from storage batteries, with a reserve
against failure of the supply current.
The inter-locking system was introduced as early as 1885. It is
an arrangement of switch, lock and signal appliances so connected
that one movement must succeed another in the predetermined
order. There are 210 inter-locking plants on the Company's
system, controlling 3,161 levers.
Automatic signalling for blocking trains was introduced on 23
miles of track between Montreal and Vaudreuil early in the
present century. In 1912 its more general use began, and there
are now 987 automatic signals in operation, protecting 816 miles
of road, with an additional 64 miles under construction. These
signals are controlled solely by the train. The train on passing
a signal automatically fixes it in the "stop" position until the
train has cleared the block.
Thus does automatic, mechanical certainty replace the old-style
reliance on fallible human memory.
