train per ton of weight will vary on fiifferent grades.
Assuming that the resistance of a train at a given point
is 18 lbs* per ton, and we desire to know the weight of
train which an engine of 155$ capacity weighing 150 tons
will haul at that point;.    Dividing 31,000, the tractive
effort of the engine by 18 we get 1,722 tons as the total
weight of train including engine and tender.  Deducting
150 tonsf 1,572 tons is the net weight of train that this
engine will haul at that point.

Ihe average resistance of cars running at 10 miles per
hour is about 5 lbs per ton on the level, 7 lbs per ton
at 25 miles per hour, l@-§ lbs at 40 miles per hour and so
on.  Ehe resistance due *to grade in addition to this may
be arrived at approximately by multiplying the grade per
cent by 20.  Ihus on a 2$ grade at 25 mph the total resistance would be about 4® lbs due to grade and 7 lbs due
to speed, total 47 lbs per ton.
