MAY, 1914 Construction of an Interior Elevator in Western Canada
INTRODUCTION
The Western lines of the Canadian Pacific Railway at the
present time extend from Port Arthur and Fort William, on
the shores of Lake Superior in the East, to Port Alberni, on
Vancouver Island, in the West, covering part of Western Ontario
and the whole of the Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan,
Alberta and British Columbia. On its journey across the continent the railway opens up a territory rich in raw material,
destined for the development of every kind of commercial enterprise. The enormous increase year by year in land settlement
demands a contributory increase in industrial development.
The market for the manufactured article is within the territory
of its manufacture, and merely awaits the further investigation
on the part of the capitalist.
Each year new towns come into existence; each year the
demand for supplies grows greater; each year the importation
of merchandise that could be manufactured in the country is
steadily increasing.
The Canadian Pacific Railway, with its 1,400 Cities, Towns,
and Villages in the West, opens up a tremendous field for commercial development. The retailer is demanded at every point,
the wholesaler at strategic corners, where he is able to cover a
large expanse of settled country; the manufacturer in the cities
where the wholesale man takes the larger part of his output.
For the manufacturer, the water-powers of the Western rivers,
the coal deposits of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan,
and the Natural Gas fields of Alberta, constitute a means by
which the raw material may be turned into the finished product
with economic success and in competition with the products of
any country in the world.
The best illustration of the demand for factories in the
West may perhaps be found in the list of imports shown in
the annual summary, issued by the Dominion Government,
and for which Canada is at the present moment sending millions
of dollars out of the country.
The total imports for the year ending March, 1913,
amounted to $675,428,168, of which S670,000,179 represent
merchandise, and $5,427,168 coin and bullion.
Among the articles imported, in the composition of which
the raw material lies right at our door, are the following:
Brick, tiles, clay and manufactures of $ 3,631,488
Carriages, carts, wagons, etc 20,802,322
Cordage, rope and twine 2,979,239
Earthenware, china and graniteware 3,265,180
Flax, hemp, jute and manufactures of 8,794,963
Glass 5,322,690
Gloves and mitts 2,793,606
Leather and manufactures of 9,601,577
Brass and manufactures of 5,288,082
Copper and manufactures of 7,548,530
Iron and steel and manufactures of 138,648,364
Paper and manufactures of 8,347,381
Soap 1,335,517
Sugar, molasses, etc 20,591,488
Wood and manufactures of 28,515,039
Bread stuffs 11,633,315
3 $16,459,940 were spent on fruits, a large proportion of
which would be citrus fruits; yet the amount of fresh fruits
imported into Western Canada is too great when cognizance
is taken of the large tracts of fruit-growing lands in British
Columbia, which produce, where cultivated, the finest apples,
pears, plums, peaches, and abundance of small fruits.
$3,242,214 were spent on imported vegetables in a country
which can produce the finest garden truck, and is suited in
every way to the cultivation of all vegetables.
$33,649,791 were spent on wool and its manufactures,
yet the sheep industry is one that lends itself particularly well
to development in the West, and the earlier settled Province
of Manitoba demands the sheep industry to bring back to parts
of it that clean soil so essential to good farming. The report
of the Commissioners appointed to investigate the sheep in- •
dustry of Canada, Great Britain and the United States, and
published November 1st, 1911, discloses the fact that in Canada
there were, at the time of investigation, but 2,106,000 head. In
Great Britain 31,852,772; New Zealand, 23,792,947; Australia,
92,241,226 sheep of shearing age; Argentine, 67,211,754; and
United States of America, 51,216,000 including lambs. The
Province of Manitoba alone could easily take care of all the sheep
in the whole of Canada, and yet with its 41,169,098 acres had
but a sheep population of 42,000 head.
The Dominion Government has for the last few years and
still is engaged on a survey of the clay and shale deposits in the
West, and from a summary report already issued it would
appear evident that every kind of clay product can be manufactured. The demand for building material outstrips the
supply by many thousands of dollars annually, and thus there
is a great field open for the manufacture of all clay products,
and cement and its products, the huge deposits of lime rock in
Alberta and British Columbia being eminently suitable to this
industry.
The campaign which is now proceeding with a view to
encourage a greater proportion of mixed farming farmers, will
have a tendency to gradually increase the number of head of
live stock. With a population of nearly 2,000,000, Western
Canada is at the present time (notwithstanding the marvellous
productiveness of its land) importing a large proportion of its
necessary food products from the United States and the East.
The Provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba,
during the year 1912, produced 12,012,043 pounds of butter,
valued at $3,113,162. It is estimated that the three Provinces
produced potatoes valued at $6,303,000, turnips and other
roots $3,819,000, hay and clover $5,226,000, alfalfa $325,000.
The sugar beet as grown in Alberta is manifestly successful
and produced 15,000 tons of sugar beets valued at $75,000
last year, but there is a much larger scope for this and other
industries at the present time, with an exceedingly profitable
future. Not nearly sufficient is being produced to take care
of the home market, in addition to which there is a large outside
market to provide for, with products which should, and can,
be grown to perfection in the West.
The Canadian Pacific Railway has now completed the
construction of the Kootenay Central Line up the Columbia
Valley as far as Spillimachene, and the balance of the line is
under contract for completion through to the Crow's Nest
Branch at Colvalli. This line is opening up a magnificent
territory for the Fruit Rancher, Farmer, Stock and Poultry
Raiser, as well as all kinds of vegetables, lumbering, mining, etc.
The town of Invermere on Lake Windermere is the centre of
Railroad construction activity and advantage should be taken
of the opportunities offered to the Retailer and Settler who is
prepared to make the Valley his home.
Following is a short synopsis of the provinces, together
with a statement of their natural products.
WESTERN ONTARIO
From the Western shores of Lake Superior to the Eastern
boundary of Manitoba is a great stretch of timbered lands,
underlying which are deposits of iron, gold, clay, gravel and
sand. The product of the iron ranges which are tributary to
the lake ports, are being developed, and the iron ore used at
the blast furnaces at Port Arthur. The gold mining claims
south of Dryden and at Kenora are being exploited. The
water powers of this part of the province are estimated to produce 237,347 h.-p., but so far have only been developed at
Current River, Kakabeka Falls and Kenora. The cities of
Port Arthur and Fort William during the season of navigation,
handle the huge grain crop of the West, which is shipped out
over the lakes, and the freighters bring back a large tonnage
of coal and merchandise. The paper pulp industry is being
developed at Dryden, and Keewatin and Kenora are large flour
milling centres.
Surrounding the Twin Cities of Port Arthur and Fort
William there is estimated to be 100,000 acres of rich agricultural land suitable for grain growing, dairy farming, and all
vegetables. The industrial development of these cities creates
a large market for all agricultural produce grown locally.
MANITOBA
This Province extends from the International Boundary
to the shores of the Hudson Bay, and covers a territory rich in
agricultural products. It has an area of 251,832 square miles,
and is traversed by the Red, Winnipeg, Assiniboine, Nelson
and Churchill Rivers. The newly added territory to the north
has not yet been sufficiently explored to state with any certainty
its wealth, but there are laige stretches of timber, big clay
deposits as well as minerals. The water powers are estimated
to produce 6,916,000 h.-p., of which 78,000 has already been
developed, principally for the city of Winnipeg. The lakes of
Manitoba, which are so-famous for their white fish, are Winnipeg,
Winnipegosis and Manitoba.
The present principal products of the province are wheat,
oats, barley, flax, roots, vegetables, live stock, poultry, dairying,
cultured and domestic grasses, gypsum, clay, shale, limestone,
gravel, sand, white fish, timber, etc. The construction of locks
on the Red River, near Winnipeg, has opened up navigation
through to Lake Winnipeg, and a large traffic is being developed.
The estimated population of the province at the end of 1913
was 594,000.
SASKATCHEWAN
Has an area of 250,660 square miles, and is traversed by
the North and South Saskatchewan Rivers, with the Churchill
River in the North, and the Qu'Appelle and Souris Rivers in
the centre and south. The larger lakes are the Athabasca,
Reindeer, Wollaston, Quill and Last Mountain.
The water powers are estimated to produce 470,200 h.-p.,
but at the present time are practically undeveloped.
The estimated population of the province at the end of
1913 was 600,000.
The province has established a record for wheat growing,
and amongst its present products are wheat, oats, barley, flax,
cultivated and domestic grasses, roots, vegetables, live stock,
poultry, dairying, lignite coal, timber, clay, shale, gravel, sand, etc. ALBERTA
In area 253,570 square miles. Is the home of the Natural
Gas field, and has coal beds underlying the larger part of the
province. The Canadian Pacific Railway is bringing under
irrigation a large tract of 3,000,000 acres, at a cost of some
$11,500,000. The lands so irrigated have proved successful in
producing every kind of grain, alfalfa and other fodders, sugar
beets, vegetables, etc.
The principal rivers are the Peace, Athabasca, Bow and
Red Deer. The lakes, Athabasca, Lesser Slave, Lac La Biche
and numerous smaller ones.
Water powers are estimated to produce 1,137,060 h.-p.,
of which only about 7,300 h.-p. has been developed. The present
products of the province are wheat, oats, barley, flax, alfalfa,
roots, vegetables, live stock, poultry, dairying, sugar, coal,
natural gas, cement, clay, gravel, sand, limestone, timber, etc.
The estimated population of the province at the end of
1913 was 550,000.
BRITISH COLUMBIA
Contains about 395,610 square miles. It is traversed from
north to south by four principal mountain ranges—the Rocky
and Selkirk ranges in the east, and the Coast and Vancouver
ranges in the west.
There is a Coast line of some 1,000 miles, with many fine
harbors, in and out of which ocean liners carry merchandise and
passengers to all parts of the world.
The principal rivers are the Columbia, Fraser, North and
South Thompson, Skeena, Kootenay, Stikine, and the Peace.
The lakes are Atlin, Kootenay, Okanagan, Upper and
Lower Arrow, Quesnel, Shuswap, Adams and many others.
The water powers are estimated to produce 2,045,945 h.-p.»
of which some 137,000 h.-p. has been developed.
The estimated population of the province at the end of
1913 was 510,000.
The principal products are coal, gold, silver, copper, lead,
zinc, timber, furs, fish, oil, hops, fruit, vegetables, wheat, oats,
barley, hay and cultivated grasses, marble, granite, limestone,
gypsum, clay, shale, gravel, sand, etc.
The mineral production of the province for the year 1913
is estimated to be $30,158,793. The values were as follows:
Gold $ 6,049,526
Silver 2,027,557
Lead 2.130,280
Copper 7,021,463
Zinc 340,800
Coal 7,478,429
Coke 1,710,738
Building Materials 3,400,000
Vancouver Island, with its ports of Victoria, Nanaimo and
Alberni, is building up an immense shipping trade to all parts
of the world. The island is tremendously rich in timber and
minerals. Vancouver Island coal is the highest grade of coal
available on the Pacific Coast, and is used largely as a fuel for
steamers engaged in the Coast and Oriental trades. Every
kind of agricultural pursuit is carried on and the nearby seas
are developing large fisheries.
Further particulars in relation to Business Openings and
Industrial Opportunities mentioned herein will be gladly furnished on application to the INDUSTRIAL BRANCH, DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, CANADIAN
