CHANT IS GOUTY

Concluding' a three-day trial in Assize Court, Lim Jim, prominent Chi-
lese .merchant, was found guilty at 1
).m. hy a' jury of twelve men. He
vas charged with selling opium. The
ury was out for about three-quarters
>f an  hour.
A  second   charge   of   having  opium
n his possession confronts Urn Jim.
fcvhether the crown will proceed on
this  will  be decided  later.
The Chinese was remander by Mr.
Justice W. A. Macdonald to the close
if: the Assizes for sentence.
Evidence disclosed that PL C. M.
Dolice engaged A. C. Lachenauer, narcotic agent of th© United States in-
:ernal revenue service, Detroit, to
:rap Lim Jim, whom authorities suspected of dealing in narcctic drugs.
A resident of Vancouver for th©
aast twenty-seven years, Lim Jim testified that his companies, th© Gim Lee
BTuen Company and the- Duck jShuen
Company, conducted a store business
kere of $300,000 and $600,000 respectively annually. H© also controlled
the jewelry business of Kam Yuen
Company, he said. From 1910 to 1913
he was manager of th© Chinese branch
bf the Bank of Vancouver.. He denied
that he had any dealings with Lachenauer.

Jim said, he shouted "robber" and
ran upstairs.
