CANADIAN PACIFIC LIMITED
Place Vancouver, B.C.
Date: 19 August 19 76
For the information of the Company's Solicitor and his advice thereon.
Statement of JAMES HALLIDAY
How Employed CHIEF STEWARD
In connection with Complaint received from passenger concerning incidents occurring
on board "Princess of Vancouver" on Saturday, 7 August 1976, 2000 sailing Vancouver
to Nana imp. ____
Statement taken by Mr. R.R. Reid, Asst. Manager, B.C.C.S.S.
Others present at investigation Mr. Norman Hunter, Local Secretary-Treasurer, BRAC
Mr. F.W. Atkinson, Catering Supt., B.C.C.S.S.
Q. You were advised this morning of this hearing, but not before, I understand.
A. Yes.
Q. You have present with you Mr. Norman Hunter. Mr. Hunter, what is your
official capacity with BRAC?
A. Right now I am Local Secretary-Treasurer.
Q. Mr. Halliday, do you wish anybody else present at this hearing?
A. No.
Q. Did you see Gerry Sullivan, Art Armour or Dennis Bartscher prior to going on
duty in the Princess Room on Saturday, 7 August 1976?
A. Cannot recall.
Q. On the occasion of the 7 August, in what capacity were you on duty on board
the "Princess of Vancouver"?
A. Night Chief Steward.'
Q. Would you tell us briefly what duties were required in that position on that
sailing.
A. I start at 7:30 and collect tickets prior to 8:00 p.m. From 8:00 o'clock on
I am in the Cafeteria making cash.
Q. Following that?
A. After that I go into the office and do up my tickets, put a call through for
anyone going on the Gabriola ferry, then I get in touch with the Bridge and
let them know. Then I am free. If it is not too busy I go to theBar and see
if everything is all right, if they require change, etc., and that is it until
we arrive Nanaimo.
Q. On 7 August did you, en route Nanaimo, visit the Bar prior to arrival Nanaimo?.
A. Yes.
Q. Did you observe any untoward attitude of either Art Armour, Dennis Bartscher
or Gerry Sullivan?
A. Armour was on the floor. He was working. Gerry was there. He was taking the
garbage out. Didn't see Dennis.
Q. It has been suggested in this complaint, that drinking had taken place between
the three members prior to coming on board ship. Did you detect the smell of
alcohol on either Gerry Sullivan or Armour?
A. No, I wasn't close enough. - 2 -
Q. Did any passengers approach you and complain; about horseplay taking place
in the Princess Room?
A. No, no one approached me. If they had, I would certainly have looked in.
Q. Did you notice moisture or any soiled areas on the carpet that could have
occurred recently?
A. The Bar is pretty dark to see anything like that. It is hard to say.
Q. Mr. Atkinson, do you have any questions you wish to ask?
Mr. Atkinson: Would you figure there was any sign of these people drinking anything
that would cause this type of behaviour?
A. No knowledge in this instance.
Q. When you visited the Bar, did you converse with either Gerry Sullivan or
Art Armour?
A'. I probably said "How is everything going, Gerry? Everything O.K.? Need any
change?" He said "No, Boss."
Q. Mr. Hunter, as you have accompanied Mr. Halliday, for this hearing, is there
any question you wish to ask at this time?
Mr. Hunter: Not knowing the.circumstances, I am not in a position to ask questions-
Q. Mr. Halliday, are you satisfied with the manner in which this investigation has
been conducted?
A. Yes.
Q. Is there anything further you wish to add?
A. Am I implicated in this?
A. You are implicated because you were on duty, but not involved in the complaint.
