1 GREETINGS
inside passage cruises to Alaska
It is a pleasure to forward our 1980 Alaska cruise brochure,
and reply card, detailing the exciting 8-day cruise offered
by Canadian Pacific's "PRINCESS PATRICIA" on the smooth waters
of the famed Inside Passage between Vancouver, B.C. and Skagway,
Alaska.
Best described as a "Pocket Ocean Liner, the "PRINCESS PATRICIA"
provides every modern comfort. Although she is only 6,000 gross
tons, she is the largest vessel able to navigate the exciting
22 miles of Wrangell Narrows, thereby capturing one of the most
picturesque phases of this memorable voyage. All rooms are
"Outside," and your cruise fare includes accommodation, all
meals on board, and passage.
While the "PRINCESS PATRICIA" does not carry any type of motor
vehicle, there is adequate provision for motorists to store
their autos in Vancouver for the duration of the cruise, at
moderate rates.
If your client is keenly interested in seeing Alaska up close
in a friendly relaxed atmosphere, telephone collect (604)665-2507
or 2508 to make a reservation.
An early application is suggested, as these cruises are much
in demand.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely, *
Noreen Cartwright
Manager, Marketing
P.S.: Protect your client against unforseen events! While making
a "Princess Pat" reservation be sure to ask our staff about
TRAVELSURE, a comprehensive travel insurance program featuring
Holiday Cancellation Insurance.

Release: September 5, 1978
PRINCESS PATRICIA TO CONTINUE
ALASKA CRUISES IN 1979 SEASON
VANCOUVER — CP Rail's Alaska cruise liner Princess
Patricia will continue in service for at least one
more year, it was announced today.
In outlining plans to operate the 320-passenger vessel
for the 19 79 summer cruise season, B.D. Margetts, general
manager, coastal marine operations, said the ship's
carryings this year on the Inside Passage route had undergone a major turnaround after two marginal seasons.
CP Rail announced last December that the 19 78 season
would be the last for the Canadian-flag Princess Patricia
due to declining earnings and forecast cost escalations.
MORE
tmapgm^ma/mvtSi^ieiv^ •*^t^^y y^^iMy*^; 2:
A number of new factors in the Alaska cruise market
have contributed to the turnaround, with almost all the
Princess Patricia's 18 sailings this year sold out,
Mr. Margetts said.
"There has been a stepped up interest in Alaska generally,
as well as in Alaska cruising, from which we are benefitting
along with most other Vancouver-based lines. This interest
in turn has been generated from a number of sources, among
them a vigorous promotion program in the U.S. by the Alaska
Visitors Association this year, in which CP Rail participated,
and, in Canada, more aggressive marketing of inclusive-
tour and fly-cruise programs.
"In addition, "the Princess Patricia's own competitive
position has been enhanced by the fact that CP Rail now
has what is probably the most complete Alaska cruise
itinerary of any line."
Calls are made at Ketchikan, Wrangell, Glacier Bay,
Skagway, Juneau and Tracy Arm in Alaska and Prince Rupert
and Alert Bay, B.C.
Response from major tour operators and passengers, as
well as from people who, because of demand, could not
obtain cruise bookings this year on the Princess Patricia,
also played a part in the decision to operate again next
year, said Mr. Margetts.
MORE 3:
"The consensus has been overwhelmingly that, if we could
find a way to stay in operation, we should do so. The
fact that the season to date has far exceeded our
expectations appears to fully justify meeting that demand
by continuing for at least another year."
Eighteen cruises will again be operated in 1979 with
the first sailing from Vancouver May 15. Departures will
be every eight days, with the season's last cruise leaving
Sept. 28. "2
Earlier this year, CP Rail studied the possibility of
lease or purchase of another ship, in order to stay in
the Alaska cruise service after the final voyage planned
for the Princess Patricia this year. The studies have
now been put in abeyance with the decision to continue
operating the "Patricia", although the company will
continue to monitor developments in the world ship market.
The future of the Princess Patricia remains uncertain
beyond the end of 1979, after which all vessels entering
U.S. coastal waters will require sophisticated self-
contained waste disposal systems.
MORE "While there are grounds for more optimism than was the
case late last year, these major modifications still
appear prohibitive, and we continue to be concerned
about our ability to recover cost increases and still
retain a competitive fare structure," said Mr. Margetts.
"However, continuing to operate through the 1979 season
will enable us to keep our options open with respect
to the future and to closely monitor developments in
world shipping, as well as in the application of the U.S.
environmental regulations. It will also enable a further
test of the continued strength of the Alaska cruise market."
The 6,000-ton Princess Patricia is the only Canadian-
flag vessel in west coast cruise service. It x^as built
at Govan, Scotland in 19 49 and major refitting was carried
out to prepare the ship for Alaska cruise service in
1963 when it replaced the well-known Princess Louise.
All crew and officers are Canadian.

Dear
Enclosed you will find copies of the 1978 Alaska Inside Passage
Cruises brochure for CP Rail!s cruise liner the Princess Patricia.
It is a far more ambitious undertaking than in previous years,
bigger and more detailed, to give travellers more of a feeling
for the spectacular voyage up the west coast.
We are very pleased with the brochure and are confident it will
provide an excellent selling tool for you in 1978.
At this time I would also like to take the opportunity to let you
know that 1978 will be the farewell season for the Princess PatriciaG
Continuing operating cost escalations have made it more and more
difficult to fully recover cost increases without raising fares
beyond what travellers will pay.
This being the Princess Patricia's final year in operation, we
know that many of the ship's former passengers will want to book
passage and bid the ship a fond farewell. Mail notification is
on the way to passengers who sailed with us in the past three seasons.
We believe the interest generated by a last season will assist your
selling efforts -- both to former passengers and to those who have
never experienced this unique ship.
Despite declining earnings in 1976-77, the continuance of operations
through 1978 was made in recognition of the long-standing support
and encouragement we have received from the many tour operators and
travel agents we have dealt with over the years, and who have already
begun booking and selling space for the coming season.
There is every indication, therefore, that the 1978 cruise season
will generate heavy passenger response and we are directing all our
efforts toward making our farewell season our best evera
Yours sincerely, w>.
