HE GULF ISLANDS, BRITISH COLUMBIA
The Archipelago known as the "Gulf Islands" covers an area of approximately 160 square miles
and has a population of over 4,000 inhabitants.
Located midway between Vancouver and Victoria, serviced by the C. P. B.C. Coast Steamships and
with a climate unexcelled anywhere on the North American continent they become an ideal place
to live, or spend a restful, healthgiving vacation.
The voyage on the C.P-S.S. Princess Mary is one to be long remembered. After crossing the Gulf
from Vancouver, we wend our way through passages and channels calling at the different Islands,
each a gem of woodlands and bays of turquoise blue with little to break the peace of it all except the
call of gulls and the soft roll of water against the shore.
The climate of the Gulf Islands is most equable, averaging 65 degrees in the summer and 42 degrees
in the winter and 25 inches rainfall. Snow is seldom seen and violets, jasmine and gorse bloom in
December. Spring is nearly a month ahead of Vancouver.
Agriculture consists of mixed farming, dairying, sheep and poultry raising, etc There are good possibilities for bulb and seed culture.
A large percentage of the population consists of retired people who enjoy the quiet and beauty of
the Islands and yet have easy access to the metropolitan centers.
The views in this book have been selected to give a general idea of the various points of interest
and activities on some of the principle islands of the Gulf Island Group. MINER'S BAY
