Traffic Tower of a Continent
Wh en Nature carved a gateway a
thousand miles into the heart of North America, she
marked the centre from which would radiate the commerce of a vast Empire. From the very beginning,
trade routes naturally converged at that point. The
foundation of the City of Montreal was laid in 1642
by an illustrious French soldier, Maisonneuve, accompanied by priests and a small devoted band of colonists.
Very soon it became the rendezvous of brave and
famous explorers and missionaries, whose names are
now scattered over the geography of this continent;
and in due course it became the headquarters of the
fur trade of North America.
Although in the troublous times of the eighteenth
century it passed through some vicissitudes, its history
is the growing development of trade. As Canada
grew, so did Montreal, until now it is the largest city
of the Dominion. When Canada asserted her nationhood by linking her scattered Provinces by the rails
of the Canadian Pacific, Montreal became a pivotal
point—not only of Canadian traffic, but of the transportation system that "spans the world." At
Montreal the world-wide Canadian Pacific has its
headquarters, at Windsor Station: it also has in
Montreal one of the largest railway shops of the world,
the Angus Shops, and a fine hotel, the Place Viger.
And Montreal is fortunate in more than geographical location. The great transportation projects that
found their centre in Montreal found here also men
to finance, build and conduct them.
