REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN
Along Pile o' Bones Creek fifty years ago the Royal North-
West Mounted Police rode for days in constant sight of vast
herds of buffalo. The accumulated remains of generations of
these animals gave the creek, and the settlement upon its banks,
their picturesque but hardly euphonious name.
A few years later the double-barrelled rifle, together with
the demand for buffalo robes for the sleighs of the Easterners,
began the extermination of the ancient lords of the prairie.
Within a generation their roving millions were reduced to a
few specimens in parks and zoological gardens. Even Pile o'
Bones disappeared from the geography books. The creek is now
Wascana; the city is Regina, proud capital of the prosperous
Province of Saskatchewan.
In 1882 the capital of what was then the North-West
Territories was moved from Battleford to Regina. In 1883 the
headquarters of the Royal North-West Mounted Police followed it. In 1905, when the more settled parts of the Territories
were divided into the Provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan,
Regina became the seat of government of the latter.
In this great city of the Canadian west, where a generation
ago the buffalo pawed the ground in their last stand against
man's destructiveness, the Canadian Pacific has placed one of
its seventeen hotels which form a convenient chain across
Canada.
