The Empress Hotel ready for opening on January 20th, 1906.
The original structure contained 161 rooms and was built at
a cost of $750,000. On July 7. 1904 the citizens of Victoria
voted 1205 to 46 in favor of granting certain tax exemptions
to the CPR. The tax exemptions have long since disappeared
and today's taxes are just under $500,000 annually.
Additions to the original Hotel were made in 1912. 1914 and
the Humboldt wing in 1929 for a grand total of 570 rooms.
Renovations during Operation Teacup in the late '60's
reduced the number of rooms to today's 416.
£3><Q><QX The hotel was designed by Francis
Aawson Rattenbury. an English architect
who had moved to Victoria in 1693.
He also designed the British Columbia
Legislative Buildings, the Bank of
Montreal on Government Street
and the Crystal Gardens. 75TH ANNIVERSARY PACKAGE
