SUMMING IT UP: DO'S AND DON'TS.
DO Beware of BARGAINS. Make taxi drivers use their meters. Give street vendors
and smail shopkeepers about i/3 to i/2 of what they ask. Go to the big shops fe fixc'cl-
prices. See list on page.3. Look at several stores and compare prices before you buy.
DO SEE MODERN BOMBAY—by bus or taxi along Marine Drive to Malabar
Hill, up the hill to Hanging Gardens, where you get a fine view of the city. Bus
Routes B, E, H, P.
DO SEE THE INDIAN BAZAAR section D-2—go to Crawford Market D-2
where you will see all kinds of people and dress, endless variety of fruits, flowers, birds
and what have you.
DO Go SWIMMING at Breach Candy (25 minutes by " B " Tardeo Bus) if you
have time. Take your own soit and towel.
DO Go to JUHU BEACH for swimming if you have a whole afternoon. 15 miles
out—40 minutes by train from Churchgate Station to Santa Cruz, 10 minutes bus to
Beach. Go to Country Hotel to change. Own suits and towels.
DO RIDE THE BUSES. Service is cheap and good.
DON'T fail to have the TAXI drivers use their meters. Correct fares are now approximately double what the meter reads and amount should be checked with driver's tariff
card. Pay per trip and NOT per passenger. Do not tip as it is not. customary here.
DON'T ride more than three in a horse CARRIAGE—against the law. Pay at the
rate of Re. 1/12 per hour, minimum of six annas per trip, not per passenger; no tipping.
DON'T sell your fountain pen or use it in part exchange. Pens are very valuable
here and you won't get another.
DON'T fail to reserve your seats ahead of time if you want to go to the CINEMA
(movies to you), as it is impossible to get a seat at the last minute. Times are 3-30, 6-30 '
and 9-30. See the newspapers or Salvation Army Canadian War Services bulletin boards
for other current entertainments.
DON'T let pedlars or beggars touch you. Disease is everywhere. Don't give to
beggars—it's a racket.
DON'T drink INDIAN LIQUORS.
