MacDonald, Thoreau

Printed in black ink on cream paper. The image shows a loon facing left, in profile, with its beak open. It is framed by ripples of water above and below. In the background, two islands are reflected in the water. The island on the left is larger than the one on the right. At the bottom of the bookplate, the personal name and geographic location are provided in an all-caps, serif font. This is framed by two squares containing mirror images of a closed pine cone on an evergreen sprig.

Thoreau MacDonald (1901-1989) was a Canadian illustrator, designer, and painter. MacDonald was the son of J.E.H. MacDonald, a member of the Group of Seven. As an illustrator, MacDonald worked for Ryerson Press and Canadian Forum Magazine. He served as the Forum editor for ten years. His work can be found in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa ; Hart House, University of Toronto ; and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Kleinburg, Ontario. E. R. [Robert] Hunter is the author of the biographies J.E.H. MacDonald (Ryerson Press, 1940) and Thoreau MacDonald (Ryerson Press, 1942). Hunter’s collection of research materials on J.E.H. MacDonald and Thoreau MacDonald were donated to the University of Toronto in three accessions: 1986, 1987, and 1992. The collection is kept at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library and includes draft and editorial correspondence, as well as correspondence between MacDonald and Hunter, including some illustrations.
