[Bookplate for Hôpital Général d’Ottawa No. 6]

Description

Stamped in black ink on textured, yellowed paper. In the centre, a white cross is depicted on top of a mound of earth. At the centre of the cross, the Catholic icon of the Sacred Heart is depicted: a heart with a flame above it. From the earth, a vine of ivy grows and weaves around the cross. This image is framed by two banners above and below, which bear two phrases in French: “J’ÉTAIS MALADE ET VOUS M’AVEZ VISITE / JE SUIS L’ APPUI DU FAIBLE.” This is enclosed within a circle, which is framed by another circle with a scalloped edge that contains the identification: “SOEURS GRISES DE LA CROIX / OTTAWA.” The entire image is framed with a single black-line border of a wavy line with simple scrolled decorative marks at all four corners.

The Sisters of Charity of Montreal, historically called as the Soeurs Grises de la Croix, or, Grey Sisters of the Cross was founded in 1737 by Sainte Marguerite d’ Youville in what was, at the time, New France. Marguerite and her Sisters lived at Le Verrier House on Notre Dame Street in Montreal and committed charitable acts for the poor. In 1747, Marguerite was appointed as provisional administrator of the General Hospital of Montreal. The 1840s was a period of significant growth for The Grey Nuns of Montreal, as they came to be known. From 1840-1926, the charity expanded to encompass five autonomous congregations: Saint Hyacinthe (1840), Ottawa (1845), Quebec (1849), Philadelphia, PA (1921), and Pembroke, ON (1926). In Ottawa – then called Bytown – the congregation was founded by Sister Élisabeth Bruyère, Marguerite d’ Youville’s spiritual sister. The congregation separated from the mother house in Montreal in 1854 and went by the name of The Sisters of Charity of Ottawa until 1869, when Bishop Duhamel brought the community Constitutions to Rome and requested a pontifical approbation for a name change from Pope Leo XIII. The congregation then maintained the name of Soeurs Grises de la Croix until 1968, when delegates voted to return to The Sisters of Charity. Following Bruyère, the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa is still active today and continues to support charitable ministries in Canada, the US, Brazil, Zambia, and other parts of the world.
