Description
Printed in black ink on cream paper. In the centre of the image, a heraldic shield is depicted. The shield is decorated by two thick intersecting lines with reversed scalloped edges, forming a cross shape. The lines are incised with a pattern of thin, close-set vertical lines and contrast against a solid background. Below the shield, a banner with chevron-ed edges contains the phrase ‘A TOUTE FORCE.’ Above the shield, the head and neck of a horse is shown in profile, facing left, with its mouth open and mane flowing.

Thomas B. Greening was born in Manchester, England in 1849. (McCormick, 1912). Greening is identified as president and manager of the Pure Gold Manufacturing Corporation in Toronto, Ontario. In 1901, he received a permit to build a four-story commercial-industrial warehouse at 276 King Street West. The architect was A. Frank Wickson (1861-1936). In 1904, the property was sold to the EW Gillet Company and the building is historically known as the Gillett Building. (Heritage Preservation Services, 2010). Greening’s personal residence was built at St. George Street, near Bernard Avenue, by Eden Smith & Son in 1908. (Dictionary of Architects). See: Toronto Society of Architects Exhibit Catalogue, 1909, 139, illus. for further details. Another source states that Greening was a partner in the firm of M. O’Connor & Co., importers and tea merchants of Toronto, in the 1870s [alt. : Mitchell and Company, Toronto ; Mitchell Coffee Company, Winnipeg]. (McCormick, 1912). This information is provided in connection with a duplicate copy of the current bookplate, along with the following details: "Greening, Thomas B. Armorial. 10.9 x 7.3 cm. Not in Gagnon ; Harrod & Ayearst supp. ; Masson Collection Vol. V, #910." (Baker, 2014). This is corroborated by an obituary in The Ottawa Journal, for J.C. Jamieson, dated July 17, 1940. Jamieson is listed as "secretary-treasurer of the Pure Gold Manufacturing Company and the Blue Ribbon Manufacturing Company […] Mr. Jamieson was born in Brockville and in 1886 moved to Hamilton where he was connected with Thomas B. Greening in the tea business. (Ottawa Journal, 1940). Greening is also identified for his role as Governor of Toronto General Hospital and his participation in the York National, Arts and Letters Club, R.C.Y.C., and Thistle Club ; the Hamilton and Royal Hamilton Yacht Club. (McCormick, 1912).
