Description
Printed in black ink on cream-coloured paper. An interior scene depicts a robed and tonsured monk sitting in a study room. The monk is seated with his head resting in his right hand on the far side of a lectern that holds three open, vellum-bound manuscripts. Behind the monk, an open wooden cupboard is topped by a niche shelf with many closed, bound vellum manuscripts and a human skull. To the far left, there is a recessed bench seat at a diamond paned window containing several objects, including a crucifix, an hour glass, and another manuscript. The entire scene is framed by a border that contains the owner’s name and motto, as well as decorative vine-leaf scrollwork.

Rufus Hawtin Hathaway (1869-1933) was an author and renowned Canadian book collector and bibliophile. Between 1880 and 1930, he developed a comprehensive collection of Canadian literature that included many works by authors from the "Group of the Sixties," and the "Confederation Poets," including works by Bliss Carman (1861-1929) and Charles G.D. Roberts (1860-1943), among others (UNB Libraries, n.d.). Hathaway worked for the Canadian National Railway in Toronto and served as president of the Arts and Letters Club, an organization of artists and writers based in Toronto. At Hathaway’s death in 1933, his collection and a substantial amount of personal correspondence was donated to the University of New Brunswick Libraries. The collection is in the Harriet Irving Library and is identified as The Rufus Hathaway Collection of Canadian Literature. (UNB Libraries, n.d.). J.E.H. [James Edward Hervey] MacDonald (1873-1932), the creator of the bookplate, was a Canadian painter and one of the founders of the Group of Seven (Government of Canada, n.d.). The "Masters and Companions" quote is taken from Reverend Joseph Hall’s epistle to his patron Lord Denny, on his "mode of spending the Day." (British Critic, 1827). Hall (1574-1656) was Bishop of Exeter and Norwich. A Calvinist, he published numerous moral, satirical, and devotional writings throughout his career.
