The Institut Canadien was founded in Montreal in 1844 by a group of young, liberal French-Canadians. It offered a library and a place for gathering, and the institute often hosted debates and speakers. Its liberal nature often promoted controversial topics which drew the attention and condemnation of the Catholic Church. It eventually entirely ceased existence in 1900. The material records of the organization, including the library, are held at BANQ. There is a series dedicated to the library particularly, which includes catalogues of the library holdings and information about the users and lending of the institution.
