Notes |
Jacques-Cartier was a system of schools located in Montreal and established in 1857. The "ecole modele" was a sister school to the "ecole normale" of the same name. Traditionally, these pairs of schools were established to educate teachers while also educating students. The "3/2 class" is an indication that the student receiving the prize was in his second division, third degree of learning. In the model school, there were three divisions and six degrees within each division. The logo at the top corresponds with the logo of the educational journal, "Le Journal de l'Instruction Publique," published from 1857-1879 in Montreal. It also corresponds with the Normal School logo. The insignia was created by the famous Canadian engraver John Henry Walker. A single hand in black ink addressed the prize bookplate to the recipient, George Johnston. Presumably it was written by the principal, whose signature is illegible at the bottom. Printed by E. Senecal.
