L'Union des Commis-Marchands de la Citée de Montréal (the Union of Merchant Clerks of the City of Montreal) was created in 1876 by a group of business employees. It was incorporated July 24, 1880 by the legislature of Québec. Around 1980, the Union of Commerce seceded from the Union of Merchant Clerks. The goal of the society was to help its members in the case of illness or accident, to offer help and to confer other advantages to their widows and heirs, to provide for its members a library, a journal reading room as well as an amusement room. The Union was ruled by general assemblies and administered by an executive board.
